  • Berlin Art Galleries

  • The Gemäldegalerie, (Old Master Paintings) located on Stauffenberg-Strasse, contains a magnificent array of work by the old European masters, which were specially chosen to represent all the main European schools of art. They were formed as a collection from the 18th century, but following the reunification the collection received a brand new building in the magnificent Kulturforum. Highlights of the gallery include Hans Holbein’s Portrait of George Gisze, Caravaggio’s Cupid Victorious, Vermeer’s The Glass of Wine, and Rembrandt’s Portrait of Hendrickje Stoffels. However, one of the most important works housed here is Jan van Eyck’s Madonna in Church, a theme continued by the gallery in the form of Botticelli’s Madonna with Child. German artists are also well represented, including one of Schongauer’s rare surviving panel paintings, Birth of Christ and Albrecht Dürer’s portrait of the mayor of Nuremberg.

The Alte (Old) Nationalgalerie, located on Bodestraße is a magnificent porticoed building, fronted by the impressive statue of Kaiser Wilhem IV mounted on a horse. The Nationalgalerie building was originally completed in 1876, and was used to house the collection of modern art from the Akademie der Künst (Art Academy). After WW2 the collection was divided and some sent to the Neue Nationalgalerie in West Berlin. This building then attained the appropriate new name of the Alte Nationalgalerie. After the reunification the collection was brought back to the Alte Nationalgalerie. New exhibition halls in the gallery contain paintings from the German Romantic era, including work by Caspar David Friedrich and Karl Friedrich Schinkels. A highlight of the gallery is Arnold Böcklin’s dramatic painting, The Island of the Dead.

The Neue (New) Nationalgalerie located on Postsdamer Straße, is fronted by sculptures by Henry Moore and Alexander Calder, giving a taste of the fantastic art works that await you inside. The phenomenal glass building topped with a flat steel roof was built after the Second World War to house the collection of modern art that was brought to West Berlin from the Nationalgalerie in East Berlin. The collection is mainly comprised of 20th century art, but does feature some artists of the late 19th century, most notably Edvard Munch. There is a strong prominence of German art, including work of the Bauhaus Movement and artists experimenting with shocking realism, such as Otto Dix. Post-WW2 art is also well represented, as is work by other great modern European creators.

The Bauhaus-Archiv located on Klingelhöferstaße is a strikingly contemporary, luminous white building with impressive glass-panelled gables in a sleek, wave-lake design. The Bauhaus School of Art, founded in 1919, was perhaps the most influential art institution in the 20th century, making an invaluable contribution to contemporary art, and inspiring many artists and architects. The collection of art work from the institution has been housed in its present site since 1979, as well as containing the archive, the building also houses a library and exhibition halls.

The Kupferstichkabinett (Print Gallery), located on Matthäikirchplatz, houses a massive collection which includes approximately 520 000 prints, 2000 engraver’s plates, and 80 000 watercolours and drawings, including a particularly moving portrait of Albrecht Dürer’s mother. Alongside the Print Gallery is the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) which not only contains a superb collection of art books, it also contains exhibits of posters, advertisements and other design mediums.

The Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum, located on Fasanenstraße is a small private art gallery which features the work of the phenomenal artist. The artist lived most of her life in Berlin, moving here upon marrying a doctor who worked in a working-class district. Her work depicts many of the social hardships people in this area suffered from, as well as human torment, which the many drawings, posters and sculptures in the gallery hold testament to. The gallery also displays documents relating to the life of Käthe Kollwitz, such as letters and photographs.
