Cannes Art Galleries
- The spectacularly ornate Villa Domergue on Avenue Fiesole, is the location for the gallery displaying the lifetime’s work of Jean-Gabriel and Odette Domergue. Previously known as Villa Fiesole, the house was built in 1934 on land Jean-Gabriel Domergue bought at the foot of La Californie Hill. The artist was extremely influenced by the Italian style, and thus designed the house in keeping with this trend. Odette Domergue was a sculptress, and used her talents to design the villa’s terraced gardens, ponds and waterfalls. Jean-Gabriel Domergue died in 1962 and his wife consequently bequeathed the estate to the City of Cannes in 1973. In accordance with the artists’ wishes, their bodies previously laid to rest at Le Grand Jas Cemetery, were buried in the Villa’s grounds in November 2000.
The Hurtebize et Cie exhibition is located in Galerie Gray d'Albion in the Gray d'Albion shopping centre which is situated between Rue d'Antibes and the La Croisette. This is an exceptional art gallery that specialises in paintings from the Flemish and Dutch schools of art. There are many beautiful paintings to be found here, including those featuring pastoral scenes. These include a painting of sheep by Balthasar Paul Ommeganck and a piece depicting a church nave by Paulus Vredeman de Vries. The owner of the gallery, Dominique Hurtebize, an avid collector for about 20 years, delights in sharing his enthusiasm for art with visitors.
The Galerie de la Malmaison situated on Boulevard de la Croisette is Canne’s newest museum. La Malmaison was originally part of the famous Grand Hôtel, but today is used as the location for the city’s temporary art exhibitions. The exhibitions which display modern and contemporary art are held in the house’s beautiful landscaped gardens. Exhibitions in the past have included a showcase of the work of revolutionary German painter and sculptor, Stefan Szczesny. The artist pioneered an avant-garde movement in the 1980s which changed the face of contemporary art forever. Szczesny is compared favourably in style to the French master Matisse, because of the vivid use of colour and texture they have in common. The display includes sculptures, paintings and drawings all done in his imitable vibrant, powerful and expressionistic style.
Espace Miramar housed on the ground floor of the former hotel “Palais Miramar” located on the corner of Promenade de la Croisette and Rue Pasteur is a fabulous collection of work by the city’s up-and-coming artists. Exhibitions at the gallery change bi-monthly and always contain a wonderfully eclectic mix of styles, media, and genre. The huge building also contains a 400 seat theatre, a cinema, and a large hall, as well as the 130m² room provided for temporary exhibitions. The exhibitions mainly focus on photography, a form particularly pertinent to Cannes’ film association, but do include many other visual art forms in a broader sense.
The Galerie du Carlton, which is located in the prestigious Inter-Continental Hôtel Carlton on boulevard La Croisette, displays works by many of the great masters, such as Matisse, Utrillo, Picasso, Chagall, Renoir, and Vlaminck. There are also many fabulous displays of glassware and sculpture on show, all available for purchase. The gallery can be entered through the hotel or via rue du Canada, the side street next to the hotel.
