Cologne Art Galleries
- Museum Ludwig situated on Bischofsgartenstrasse, in the shadow of the Dom, is a fantastic museum of modern art, holding a collection of many of the great works of the 20th and 21st centuries. The gallery is laid out over four floors, with all the major contemporary schools of art depicted, including, Pop Art, German Expressionism, Surrealism, Russian avant-garde. Highlights of the gallery include works by Picasso, Dalí and Magritte, as well as the regular special exhibitions.
The Wallraf-Richartz Museum/Fondation, located on Martinstrasse was opened in 2001 as the sister gallery to the Museum Ludwig, and contains artworks ranging in age from the 13th to 19th centuries spread over five floors. The medieval paintings, many of which were painted in Cologne, are a highlight of the gallery, especially The Martyrdom of St Ursula at the City of Cologne, from 1411, which is the oldest known image of the city. 17th century Dutch and Flemish pieces also abound, particularly works by masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens and van Dyck. The collection of 18th and 19th century art includes works by the masters, Van Gogh, Cèzanne, and Munch, as well as many Impressionist pieces by those such as Renoir, Monet and Sisley. Temporary exhibitions are also held in the gallery, but entrance to these costs extra.
The Käthe Kollwitz Museum situated in the upper level of the Neumarkt Passage shopping centre located on Neumarkt, houses the largest collection of the works of this famous 20th century German artist. Drawings, paintings, prints, posters and sculptures are all on display here, many depicting Kollwitz’s typical brooding and emotive Expressionist style.
The Sculpture Park, situated on Riehler Strasse, next to the Zoobrücke (bridge) is an unusual art exhibit located within an open green space near the zoo. Featuring thirty pieces of contemporary sculpture, by those such as Cragg, Förg and Suvero, this is a unique experience in viewing art. Opened in 1997 as part of the Art Cologne Festival, this park has continued to enjoy popularity ever since.
