- The greatest and most extraordinary art gallery in Amsterdam is the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA), the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp located in Leopold De Waelplaats, in Plaatsnijdersstraat. The gallery is housed in a magnificent huge 19th century Neo-Classical building, which is almost as impressive as the art it contains. The imposing façade of the building contains huge pillars and carved chariots driven by women on each side of the roof. The collection is made up of both ancient and modern works, including paintings, sculptures and drawings, with the upper floor holding pieces from the Medieval Flemish period, through to the 19th century, and the lower floor holding modern works by renowned Belgian artists. The famous ‘Antwerp Trio’ of Rubens, van Dyck and Jordaens are well-exhibited, as well as international artists such as van Gough and Tissot.
More modern contributions in the gallery include Magritte’s macabre sculptured version of David’s Madame Récamier painting, featuring a reclining coffin, as well as an entire section devoted to the works of Ensor. One of the most celebrated paintings in the gallery is the 1437 portrait of Saint Barbara by van Eyck, which depicts in various grey tones, the saint sitting in front of a magnificent gothic cathedral tower under construction. Another popular piece is the more modern Woman Ironing done by Wouters in 1912; this painting portrays an intimate, serene home scene in the typically muted colours of the Impressionist period. The overall star sight is one of the great works by the master, Rubens, Adoration of the Magi, done in 1624, which shows an astonishing mix of composition. Other great works include As the Old Sang, the Young Play Pipes by Jordaens, breaking with the pattern of his usual religiously-themed paintings, and Pink Bows by Delvaux in 1936, which is a Surrealistic dream-like depiction of women, influenced by Freud’s psychoanalytical theories.
The Kunstgalerij Isabella Brant located appropriately on Isabella Brantstraat, a narrow street behind the Antwerp Court of Justice (Gerechtshof), named after the first wife of the famous Antwerpian artist, Rubens. The gallery is owned by Hans Beers, who moved to the city thirty years ago from Holland, and here he exhibits both his own paintings and those of others. Within Beers’ paintings you will see frequent reoccurrence of his favourite themes, war and peace, creation and evolution of mankind, and the grandeur of the Cosmos.
The Jordaenshuis located in Reyndersstraat is the home of another great Antwerpian artist, who is often forgotten in the shadow of the famous Rubens. Jacob Jordaens lived and worked in this house in the 17th century, and his house and former studio are now used as exhibition space for young, promising artists. When exhibitions are held visitors are able to view the interior of the house, but it is closed at all other times.
The Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (MUHKA) (Museum of Contemporary Art) located on Levenstraat, is a captivating museum on the wonders of avant-garde art. The gallery is situated in an old warehouse which has been revamped in a modern and minimalist architectural style. The collection depicts a progressive view of various art forms, and exhibitions highlight selected themes throughout the year. On the roof of the four-storey building is a pleasant bar with a pretty patio and breathtaking views over the Scheldt.
