Nice Art Galleries
- The Musée Chagall on Avenue Dr Ménard holds the biggest collection of Marc Chagall’s work in the world. The gallery was inaugurated in 1972, to house the works of this great French-Russian Expressionist artist. There are over 400 pieces of Chagall’s work in this gallery, including oils, pastels, drawings, lithographs, ceramics, sculptures, and mosaics by the artist. Amongst the exhibits are paintings from Chagall’s Biblical Message series in a collection of seventeen canvases, and five different versions of The Song of Songs. The gallery also contains three stained-glass windows illustrating the Creation of the World, and a large mosaic piece portraying the prophet Elijah.
The Musée des Arts Asiatiques on Promenade des Anglais gives a fantastic depiction of the entire gamut of Asian art from both ancient times and the 20th century. The setting for this magnificent gallery is a purpose-built structure, designed in white marble and glass with clean lines and simplicity.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts located on Avenue des Baumettes, is home to over three centuries or fantastic artistic creations. The gallery is housed in a spectacular 1878 villa, which was once home to a Ukrainian princess. The gallery’s origins lie in a bequest made by Napoleon III to the city, and is now home to a huge collection of spectacular works of art by those such as Jules Chéret and Van Dongen, and Impressionists Bonnard and Dufy.
Musée d’Art Moderne et d’art Contemporain on Promenade des Arts is housed in a striking building designed to house the city’s collection of modern art. The purpose-built structure is comprised of marble towers and glass-covered passageways, and its artistic collection depicts a range of French and American contributors to the avant-garde movement from the 1960s to the present day. These include creations such as Pop Art by Andy Warhol, and pieces by those such as Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenburg. There is also a large collection of work by École de Nice artists, such as Yves Klein, to whom an entire section of the museum is dedicated.
The Musée Alexis et Gustav Adolf Mossa, situated on Quai des Etats-Unis, is a remarkable collection displaying the artistic works of a father and son. Alexis was an extraordinary watercolour painter, and was also the founder of Nice's famous carnaval parade. His son, Gustav Adolf, continued in the way of his father, and produced many magnificent pieces in his lifetime.
The Musée International d'Art Naïf Anatole-Jakovsky (Museum of Naïve Art) is located on Avenue Val-Marie in the Fabron district. This fascinating museum is named after the art critic, Jakovsky, and houses his personal collection, which contains more than 600 drawings and canvases. The exhibits include the work of artists from over twenty countries, ranging in age from prehistoric to more recent times.
