Madrid Art Galleries
- Madrid boasts a large number of fantastic art galleries such as the Museo del Prado, located on Paseo del Prado, which hosts a world-renowned art collection. Among its star sights is the collection of Spanish pieces, which includes 140 pieces by the art genius Goya, as well as St Dominic Presiding over an Auto-de-Fé by de Berruguete, El Greco’s The Adoration of the Shepherds, and Archimedes by de Ribera. The building the gallery is housed in is a work of art in its own right, a Neo-Classical structure, with a wonderful portal featuring a relief of Fernando VII. The gallery also houses an exceptional collection of Italian works by masters such as Titian, Bellini, Caravaggio, and Raphael, as well as over a hundred works by the Dutch supremo Rubens.
Madrid was the focus of the world’s attention when it succeeded in attaining a priceless collection of European art which it now houses in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza also located on Paseo del Prado. This is one of the most important art collections in the world displaying a wealth of international pieces from the 13th to 20th centuries. The collection originally belonged to the Thyssen-Bornemisza family in Switzerland, but in 1993 Spain bought the collection for $350 million. Highlights of this spectacular collection include Self-Portrait by Rembrandt, Portrait of a Young Man by Raphael, and Young Night in a Landscape by Carpaccio of the Venetian school of art.
Equally as spectacular is the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, located on Calle Santa Isabel, which features Picasso’s Guernica as its central exhibit. This fabulous collection of 20th and 21st century art, established by King Carlos and Queen Sofia (hence the name) in 1990, is a spectacular example of the magnificence of cotemporary art. Among the other fantastic works are other masterpieces by Picasso such as the famous Woman in Blue, the magnificent Portrait II by the famous Catalan artist Joan Miró, as well as works by giants such as Dalí and Juan Gris. The glass lifts on the outside of the gallery give spectacular views over the city as you ascend the building.
The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Academy of Fine Arts), situated on Calle de Alcalá, was established by Fernando VI in 1752 and includes works by those such as Spanish masters El Greco, Velázquez and Goya, as well as many pieces by European artists. Goya’s famous Burial of the Sardine is among the highlights of the gallery, as are works by Bellini, Van Dyck, Ruebns and Titian. The academy also has the prestige of counting Picasso and Dalí amongst its former pupils.
The Casa-Museo Sorolla is situated in the former home of the fabulous Valencian artist on Paseo del General Martínez Campos, where he lived for the last thirteen years of his life until 1923. Joaquín Sorolla was renowned for his impressionistic works of Spanish life, leading to him becoming known as the “Spanish Impressionist”, and many of them can be viewed here. Spanish folk men, landscapes and seascapes are amongst his most popular themes and can all be seen in the rooms of his fabulous house.
