St Tropez Art Galleries and Museums
- St- Tropez also contains a number of fascinating museums, showcasing both the history of the town, and some more unusual subjects. The Musée de l'Annonciade, located in the Annonciade Chapel in Place Grammont, was originally a church which was built in 1568, but was converted into a museum in 1955 by architect Louis Süe. This museum is celebrated as the most notable art museum in the area. The collection originated with the work of Paul Signac, but was later added to by the work of other notable artists. Today you will find an extensive collection of Post-Impressionist pieces from both the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There was an infamous occurrence here in 1961 when 65 valuable pieces were stolen from the museum but thankfully were later recovered.
The collection includes works by Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, Bonnard, Paul Signac and many others, including Charles Camoin’s famous painting Open Window on the Harbour at St-Tropez, which epitomises the city’s allure. Other highlights of the gallery are L’Orage by Signac, which depicts the onset of a storm over St-Tropez harbour, and Bonard’s Nu Devant la Cheminée, which shows an innocent portrait of a young nude in front of a mirror.
Musée Naval de la Citadelle, is located in the dungeon of the Forteresse (keep). The museum contains many exhibits on the history of the town and its maritime past, including model ships and statues of its naval heroes.
A fantastic little museum is La Maison des Papillons hidden down a small medieval lane, on rue Etienne Berny. The former residence of noted photographer JH Lartigue, it is now a most astonishing butterfly museum. This amazing collection includes a huge variety of specimens, both from around France, and rare specimens from the Amazon. The museum also exhibits many pieces of jewellery and other items with butterflies decorated on them.
Château Suffren located on quai Jean-Jaures, was built in 980 CE, and served as the home to St-Tropez’s local lords. The château, which is one of St-Tropez’s oldest buildins, also contains a tower, and was named after its most famous inhabitant Admiral Pierre André de Suffren, “terror of the English”. There is also a statue of the man on the quai Suffren. Today the château is an antiques shop and also the site of temporary art exhibitions.
A spectacular art gallery is the Galerie dei Barri, located in Place dei Barri Gassin, which has enjoyed a mass following of art collectors for over thirty years. The owner has chosen a carefully-selected mixture of innovative and diverse pieces, so there is sure to be something for everyone. Artists include Caudron, Stawiarski, and Tristan Ra.
