Barcelona Art Galleries
- In a city as renowned for its magnificent artistic creations as Barcelona, it’s unquestionable that Barcelona would have a plethora of different art galleries, and the city certainly does not disappoint. Ranging from galleries displaying the archetypal Modernista style, to those depicting Gothic, Renaissance and modern art, art lovers will definitely find something for them amongst this diverse array. The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya housed in the spectacular Palau Nacional, in Parc Montjuïc, contains one of Europe’s finest collections of Romanesque frescos, in particular those from Sant Climent de Taüll. The gallery hosts over a thousand years of the area’s artistic history under one roof, and apart from the Romanesque exhibits, there are also a magnificent Gothic display, featuring artists such as Dalmau and Huguet, and many Baroque and Renaissance pieces from all over Europe. There are also pieces by Catalan artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including fine and decorative Modernista art.
Another spectacular art gallery is the Fundació Joan Miró, situated in the pretty Parc de Montjuïc, which is housed in a dramatic, white building that was specially designed by Miró’s friend for the purpose of displaying the artist’s work. The gallery holds many paintings, sculptures and tapestries, all of which were donated by Miró himself, including the Barcelona Series, thought by many to be some of the artist’s best work.
The Museu Picasso is a must for Picasso fans, as it holds the biggest display of the artist’s work outside Paris. The collection is spread across five adjoining medieval palaces, the main entrance being through the Palau Aguilar on Carrer Montcada. The collection contains over 3000 works, including 141 ceramic pieces, but the highlight of them all are those done in his formative years, such as The First Communion, and Science and Charity.
The Museu d’Art Contemporani on Plaça dels Angels is a haven for modern art lovers. This imposing, glass-fronted building is particularly appropriate for the style of art it displays. The paintings and sculptures are mainly of Spanish origin from the 1950s period and onwards, but there are also temporary exhibitions that display works from various international artists.
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies on Carrer d’Aragó creates an opportunity to appreciate the art of Barcelona’s best-known living artist. A visit makes for an unusual gallery experience, due to the fact that whilst other artists’ work, such as Gaudï, may be more impressive, viewing pieces whose creator you know still exists adds a whole new dimension to your understanding of them. Tápies’ work is extremely abstract, being inspired by Surrealism, and uses a variety of different mediums, such as metal and concrete. In fact the building itself, which houses the gallery, is topped with one of the artist’s metal creations, his wire structure Cloud and Chair.
