Barcelona Museums
- The many museums in Barcelona chart the history of a city whose past spans back thousands of years, starting from archaeological museums with prehistoric exhibits, to museums which depict the modern day culture, such as those on football or the Olympics. The spectacular Museu Arqueològic, which is housed in the 1929 Palace of Graphic Arts on Passeig Santa Madrona, exhibits archaeological finds from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which range in age from prehistoric to the Visigothic period. One particular highlight is the Drama d’Evissa, a fourth-century sculpture which was found in Ibiza’s Carthaginian necropolis. Among other pieces displayed include finds from the Greco-Roman town of Empúries, majestic Iberian silver, and beautiful Visgothic and Hellenistic Mallorcan jewellery.
The Museu del Futbol Club Barcelona, which is housed at the Camp Nou Stadium, is a devoted homage to all things Barça, the city’s beloved football team Barcelona FC. Here you are able to chart the history of the club, and revel in the memory of some of their greatest sporting achievements. Trophies, memorabilia and shirts are on display here, and there is also the opportunity to purchase the team merchandise.
The area of Montjuïc is particularly rich in museums; one not to miss is housed in the fabulously dramatic, star-shaped, Castell de Montjuïc, which was once a fortress and prison, but is now home to a fabulous collection of historic armoury and spectacular model castles. Galeria Olïmpica located at the back of Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc, is a nostalgic tribute to the 1992 Olympics that were held in the city. Two other top museums are the Museu de Ceràmica and the Museu de les Arts Decoratives, which are both housed in the beautiful Palau Reial de Pedralbe on Avinguda Diagonal. The Museu de les Arts Decoratives was opened in 1937 and includes many household objects ranging from the Middle Ages right through to the present. The museum also has a vast collection of period furniture from the many other majestic houses in Barcelona, and a spectacular genealogical tree portraying the dynastical line of the great count-kings of the city. The adjoining Museu de Ceràmica contains works in both pottery and ceramic, ranging from ancient Moorish and Catalan pieces to modern designs by artists such as Picasso and Miró.
The unusual Museu de la Xocolata on Carrer del Comerç, is a chocoholic’s paradise. The museum, founded by the city’s chocolate and pastry-makers union, charts the history of one of Spain’s, and indeed the world’s most-loved foods. The exhibits, which include posters, film footage and photographs, depict the history of chocolate right from the first discovery of cocoa in South America, through to the building of the first chocolate machine in Barcelona. There is also a display in honour to the art of mona, creating spectacular edible sculptures. This fascinating craft was developed by the Catalonians, and has developed into an annual competition between patissers over who can produce the most imaginative creation from chocolate. Entries over the years have included models of famous buildings, and structures decorated with feathers and jewels. Many different examples of this craft are on display here, and other delicious chocolate treats are available for purchase in the museum’s café, so you can indulge to your heart’s content.
