  • Cologne History

  • The Romans first came to the area now known as Cologne in 33 BCE when they discovered that its strategic position on the Rhine made it a good place to start a settlement. They named the town, Colonia, from where it gets its name today, although in German it is known as Köln. It 50 CE a girl from the town married Emperor Claudius and Cologne was consequently given the honour of becoming a city. The Romans gave many things to the city including engineering advancements, military reinforcements, and Christianity; the latter leading the city to become a religious centre in the Christian world for many centuries to come.

One of the developments of this was the building of the magnificent cathedral, the Dom, which began construction in 1248 but took another 600 years to build. The archbishops of Cologne had most of the power over the city during the early part of the millennium, but by the 15th century the inhabitants of Cologne had driven the archbishops out of power. Towards the end of this century Cologne had become one of the most prosperous German-speaking cities in the world.

In 1794 French soldiers took over the city and began renumbering the house numbers according to their own French system. The house of the Muelhens family was numbered 4711 and this was used to name their now famous make of eau de cologne. The popularity of the scent spread enormously, especially with the aristocracy who were not keen on bathing! In 1815 Cologne and the Rhineland came under the control of the kings of Prussia, and the city continued to enjoy widespread success. Cologne became a pivotal centre amongst the new railway tracks in the mid 19th century, and the Dom was finally finished in 1880. Its prosperity as a commercial and transport nucleus continued right into the 1900s, but suffered upon the outbreak of the two World Wars, especially the Second World War.

Under Hitler, in 1936 the German army remilitarised the Rhineland in breach of the terms of the Peace Treaty from World War I. In the early 1940s the troops then regrouped in Cologne in preparation to launch an attack on the Netherlands, Belgium and France. This led to the initial Allied bombing of the city, with later attacks on the army and industrial structures of Cologne. The last and most destructive raid was on the 2nd March 1945, and left Cologne in a state of devastation. The city was almost completely destroyed, with all of its bridges and the majority of its buildings demolished. Following the war the rebuilding of the city began in earnest, the result of which is most of the structural design that can be seen in the city today. In recent decades Cologne has again regained its place as an architectural, commercial and media centre of Germany.
