Cologne Shopping
- The main shopping area in the city is in the Innenstadt (city centre), on Hohe Strasse, the country’s first pedestrianised street, and Schildergasse where you will find all the best-known international stores, such as H&M, Zara, the Body Shop, Benneton, C&A, and Mango, as well as some local German favourites. Also on Hohe Strasse is the enormous Galeria Kaufhof, a massive department store selling all manner of items, including cosmetics, jewellery and the best in designer names.
On Schildergasse you will also find many fine stores including the enormous Sport Scheck which is spread over six floors selling every sports item imaginable; as well as Humanic’s massive flagship store selling shoes in every size, shape and design possible for men, women and children on three floors. The main shopping area continues on Neumarkt and Appellhofplatz where there are many shopping centres, including the renowned Neumarkt Galerie with its huge contemporary glass and steel edifice, complete with an enormous melting ice cream cone on one of its corners! This is the city’s biggest shopping centre with a vast range of different stores selling jewellery, health food, fashion, books and footwear. There are also many restaurants, cafés and ice cream parlours as well. Some of the best shops in the shopping centre include the Mayersche Buchhandlung, which stocks over 500 000 books spread over three floors, including a fantastic reading area, and Sinn Leffers, another huge store selling well-known names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Mexx and Esprit.
Adjoining the Neumarkt Galerie is the Olivandenhof shopping centre, located on Richmodstrasse, which contains forty different shops on four floors, selling a range of goods. Restaurants and coffee shops are also aplenty, and the shopping centre won a design award in the 1980s for its sleek, sophisticated design and luminous oval atrium. Also on Neumarkt is Daniels, a suave and stylish men’s fashion store which sells the best designers labels such as Armani, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren. Breite Strasse is another popular pedestrianised street in the area, with many homeware, fashion, shoes, jewellery and leather goods stores, as well as Galerie Karstadt, a gigantic department store, with a gourmet food hall, a music store, as well as books, fashion and cosmetics. Perhaps the most famous name on this street is Birkenstock and Berkemann, which has become an internationally-renowned name. These trendy sandals can be found here in every design, shape, and colour.
The main railway station, Dom/Hauptbahnhof, in the centre of the Old Town has a fantastic shopping centre, Colonnaden, which holds a huge variety of shops as well as restaurants and cafés. Nearby in the main Domkloster square are a number of exclusive boutiques, including the renowned Louis Vuitton, and local favourite, the Chopard Boutique. Here you can find the best in exquisitely-made jewellery and watches. In Frankenwerft, Rhine Gold is a boutique purveying unique, hand-made jewellery as well as local goldsmiths’ crafts. Around the Ringstrassen (ring road) area there are many fine stores such as the well-known international brands Diesel, French Connection (FCUK), and M·A·C Cosmetics on Ehrenstrasse, and many exclusive boutiques on Mittelstrasse, such as the chic Apropos, with its pink entrance tunnel, covered courtyard and stylish café and a huge range of designer names such as Rock and Republic, and True Religion. There are also a great number of independent German stores in the area, selling ethnic goods, exquisite jewellery and cool skateboarder styles.
