Frankfurt Shopping
- The main shopping streets in the city include the large, pedestrianised Zeil (Golden Mile), known as ‘the Fifth Avenue of Germany’, where shops such as the massive German department store Galeria Kaufhof selling fashion, electrical items, music and gourmet delicacies, can be found. The other main department stores on this street are, Karstadt, which is the biggest department store in the Rhein-Main region, and Peek and Cloppenberg. Further along the street is the opulent Parfümerie Douglas which features a massive range of cosmetics, scents and beauty items for men and women; as well as well-known high street names, Esprit and Zara. The greatest shopping experience on the Zeil is to be had in the Zeilgalerie, an enormous steel, concrete and glass structure which contains over fifty shops spread between the seven floors of its unusual spiral-shaped interior.
The restaurant at the top of the shopping centre affords fantastic views out over the city. Goethestrasse features many exclusive boutiques, including Bogner, Armani, Chanel, Tiffany, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo and the Aigner Shop Frankfurt which sells upmarket designs for both men and women. Other top shopping streets include Schillerstrasse, Steinweg, Große Bockenheimer Strasse (nicknamed the Fressgasse after its huge number of gourmet food shops) and Berger Strasse. The Börsenstrasse also features many fantastic shops such as The British Bookshop, with a huge range of English-language titles. In the Sachsenhausen area the main shopping street is Schweizer Strasse, where there are a large number of stylish boutiques as well as being the site of the annual Schweizer Strassenfest every July. Here you will find shops such as House of Silver which sells funky silver jewellery as well as handbags at great prices, and Secondelle a fabulous second-hand designer clothing store which offers names such as Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. This area is also a great place to grab that must-have Frankfurt souvenir the Bembel, a glazed stoneware jug used for serving the traditional drink of the city, cider. The Hessen Center located on Borsigallee in East Frankfurt, is a huge three storey shopping centre, containing over 115 widely varying shops. These include a major department store, food and beverage specialists, as well as many restaurants and cafés.
Another great shopping street is the huge Kaiserstraße which extends west of the centre, featuring magnificent stores such as Parfümerie & Kosmetikinstitut Lehr, which sells a huge range of fabulous scents and make-up such as Chanel and Bulgari, and Zambon a fantastic international bookstore. Leipziger Strasse in the Bockenheim area also features a stunning array of shops, such as Frauenbetriebe Design which sells a great range if leather handbags, stylish fashion and jewellery; as well as the popular city markets, the Bockenheimer Wochenmarkt located on Bockenheimer Warte and the Kaisermarkt near the Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station). Also on Bockenheimer Warte is the well-liked Ladengalerie Bockenheimer Warte featuring a large number of restaurants, cafés, clothes stores, as well as a bakery and huge supermarket. Visiting the Flohmarkt (Flea Market) held every Saturday morning on Schaumsinkai, the Sachsenhäuser embankment, is one of the most popular weekend pastimes for Frankfurt’s citizens, and you can be part of the atmosphere too. Everything from antiques to bric-a-brac is on sale here, so make sure you get here early to pick up a bargain.
