Frankfurt Sports
- As the self-acclaimed German ‘Sports Capital’ Frankfurt certainly has a lot to offer sports fans, both in the way of spectator and participation sports. Its most important sporting role so far has been the staging of several of the matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup which Germany hosted. These were played at the newly-constructed hi-tech Commerzbank-Arena (formerly known as the Walstadion) located on Mörfelder Landstraße, which is also now home to the city’s American Football team, Frankfurter Galaxy who are amongst the top clubs in the European League. Important football games are also played at the stadium, which can seat up to 50, 000 spectators and features a spectacular retractable roof and giant video cube above the pitch, most often those of the home team Eintracht Frankfurt.
Another popular spectator sport in the city is that of ice hockey, with local team the Frankfurt Lions enjoying mass support. They play their home games at the Eissporthalle on Am Bornheimer Hang, where you can also try out some ice skating yourself on the indoor and outdoor rinks, with one at 400m and the other at 1800m. Many other events are also held here, such as the highly popular ice disco which takes place alternate Saturdays from 8pm-10.30pm in the winter, and international basketball, volleyball, table tennis, indoor football, tennis tournaments, and dance contests in the summer. Amateur and professional boxing championships are also held in the main hall. Another type of skating, inline skating, is also highly popular in Frankfurt, with the weekly Tuesday Night Skating event between March and October, a city institution. This rollercade takes in 85 miles of the city’s streets, which are all closed to cars for this night. To hire skates head to Skaters World located on Hamburger Allee, open until 7pm every weekday.
Cycling, jogging and running are other popular Frankfurter pastimes, and these can be undertaken at the beautiful Grüneburgpark with its many tree-lined paths, located on Siesmayerstraße, just outside the city centre, and on the pleasant banks of the River Main. Cycling maps are available from many bookshops, and you can hire bikes from a company named Call-A-Bike situated in the city. One of the most popular running events in the city is the Frankfurt Marathon, Germany's oldest city marathon, which begins on Mainzer Landstraße in the Messe (Trade Fair Grounds), and draws approximately 15 000 participants (including skaters and wheelchair athletes) every year. Crowds of hundreds of thousands of people gather to cheer on the runners, and join in the light-hearted events, such as the Children's Charity Run and the Frankfurt Pretzel Run which take place before the run. There is fierce competition between the professional runners during the marathon for the top prize of €33,000. Aquatic sports are also high on the agenda in the city, with plenty of indoor and outdoor swimming pools throughout Frankfurt, such as Panorama Bad located on Inheidener Strasse, as well as many water sports taking place on the River Main. The most up-to-the-minute activity on the water is ‘wake boarding’ - waterskiing on a snowboard. Many companies offer you the chance to hire a motor boat and take a crash course in the sport, including Windsurf located on Heerstraße.
