  • Cannes History

  • The first known inhabitancy of the vicinity today known as Cannes, was in the 2nd century BC when the Oxybian tribe from Liguria settled in the area and called it Aegitna. At this time, Aegitna was merely a fishing village that was used as a stopover between the Lerins Islands and dry land. In 69 CE the armies of Othos and Vitellius invaded the city, in a battle to become Roman emperor, and this heralded the beginning of an era of invasion, which would continue until the 9th century.

In the 10th century, the village came under the control of the Lerins Abbey. The Counts of Provence handed over the area on Le Suquet hill to the abbot, and made him ruler. During the 11th and 12th centuries the monks of this order built the Château de la Castre castle to fortify the fledgling village, and the Tour de La Castre.

It was only in 1035, that the name "Cannes" first appeared in official documentation. It is believed that the town’s name comes from the reeds (cannae) which encompasses the original area, although no reason is known for sure.

In the 14th-century, the Plague was sweeping the area, and an onslaught of pirate invasions followed. In the 16th century plague struck Cannes again, with even more force, and from this point on Cannes’s history is mainly seen within the broader context of the whole Provençal region. During this time the region was annexed by France, and thus the influence of Lerins in Cannes began to fade.

By the 17th century, the village had now become a town through the growth of houses in it and the building of the Notre-Dame church. During the 18th century many armies invaded the area, and in 1771, a vicious winter swept Provence, meaning the price of bread increased due to scarcity, which consequently initiated a revolt. During this period trade began to feature more prominently in the town's economy. After the French Revolution in 1789 the country was divided into departements and Grasse became the chef-lieu of the Cannes region. In March 1815 the town came to prominence when it was used as a stopping point for Napoleon flight from exile on the Isle of Elba.

Cannes fame began in 1834, when the British Lord Chancellor Lord Brougham made a stop here when attempting to travel to Nice. He was so taken with the tiny fishing village he encountered, its beauty and fabulous climate that he decided to build his own villa there, Château Eleonor, named for his daughter who had recently died, where he lived out the rest of his life. Following Brougham’s pioneering example, the fashion for prestigious visitors began. During his lifetime Brougham gained the support of France’s then king, Louis-Philippe, who donated two million francs, a huge amount of money in those days, to build the harbour wall.

Cannes subsequently began to grow enormously in size, going from having less than 4000 inhabitants in 1834 to 20,000 in 1896. By the close of the 19th century, tourism was already the predominant economic provider in the town.

During the 20th century its popularity as a tourist destination increased, and many celebrities started frequenting the town. Writers such as Prosper Merimee and Oscar Wilde, aristocrats including the Countess of Oxford, Lord Russell, Baron Haussmann, the Rothschilds, and even the King of Prussia were all visitors. It was seen by the rich and famous as the ultimate winter getaway, which consequently encouraged the development of the town’s landscape, including the beautiful Promenade de la Croisette. In May 1946 the now famous International Film Festival was first held. The festival is now more than sixty years old and continues to attract a worldwide gathering of glitz and glamour every year. This highlight of the film world’s calendar has really out Cannes on the map, and its prominence as an event location has led to it being favoured for many other exhibitions and events, such as MIDEM and MIPTV.
