  • Paris History

  • The first inhabitants of Paris were thought to have been a Celtic tribe called the Parisii, who came to the area in the 3rd century BCE. Remnants of the tribe’s pagan altars have been found beneath the Cathedral of Notre Dame. In 52 BCE the Romans conquered the Parisii, and sacked the city. The Romans then rebuilt the city as their administrative centre, and then founded a new town on the Left Bank. In 360 CE, after the Roman prefect was declared Emperor, the city was renamed Paris, after its original inhabitants. In the 5th century CE the Roman stronghold over the city was weakened, and following many Barbarian onslaughts, the city was eventually captured by the Franks in 476 CE. The Franks proclaimed Paris the capital of their new Kingdom, France, and converted the whole city to Christianity. In 751 CE the Carolingian dynasty was initiated when Pepin the Short ascended the throne. In 800 CE his successor Charlemange moved the capital to Aix-La-Chapelle when he was proclaimed Holy Roman Emperor. This marked the beginning of a period of decline in Paris’ history, which continued until Hugues Capet became king in 987 CE and moved the capital back to his birthplace.

Throughout the 16th and 17th century the Bourbon dynasty ruled France. After being forced to convert to Catholicism, Henri IV, became the first Bourbon king. After his assassination in 1610, the country was left to his young son, Louis XIII. Thus began over a century of decadence and pomp by the monarchy, which made them hugely unpopular with the masses. This resentment of the monarchy, combined with the vast economic inequality between the classes, culminated in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille prison in the centre of Paris, thus initiating the French Revolution. The French monarchy was abolished, and the Royal family assassinated. A rebirth of the city ensued headed by a young general from Corsica, Napoleon Bonaparte. He saved the city from an initial royalist revolt, and then led France in successful battles in Italy and Egypt. He proclaimed himself Emperor of France in 1804. A dynasty then began, but in 1851 Emperor Napoleon III was toppled by Louis-Napoleon. Under his reign, Paris became known as one of the most spectacular cities in Europe. Most of this was due to the work of Baron Haussmann appointed by Louis-Napoleon to build spectacular public works. The results of this can still be seen today, with the parks, wide boulevards, public buildings and first department stores.

In 1871 France lost the Franco-Prussian War, bringing the Napoleonic rule to a sudden end, and a Third Republic was proclaimed the very same day. The Prussian victors put very harsh terms on the French defeat, causing an uprising, and consequently set up their own government called the Paris Commune. However, this government lasted only 72 days, after which government troops stormed the city. Thus ensued a bloody week of street fighting, in which thousands of people were killed, and large parts of the city were reduced to ashes. Although the Third Republic was widely disliked throughout the century, they did bring prosperity to Paris. During their rule, Paris became known as the cultural centre of Europe, especially with the Impressionist movement gaining in prominence. This Republic also created many great public works, among them, most importantly, the Eiffel Tower.

In WW1 the city suffered badly, and Paris narrowly escaped occupation. Although France was on the side of the winning Allies, the ensuing post-war years were characterised by widespread political unrest. This fraught atmosphere meant that the government was not prepared for the outbreak of WW2, which resulted in the occupation of Paris. This was considered one of Paris’ blackest hours, but the city survived, and was liberated by Allied Forces on 25th August 1944. Paris recovered quickly from the war, and a Fourth Republic was proclaimed. The city regained its previous prominence on the international scene, and as the years progressed grew to become the successful, opulent city we know it as today.
