Cannes Landmarks
- Cannes is a beautiful town just to walk around, with the pretty coastal views and little streets. The main area is built around the Baie de Cannes and the Old Port , which both make stunning viewpoints. The main street Boulevard de la Croisette, which follows the water’s edge, is bordered with palm trees and scores of boutiques and cafes, making it an extremely pleasant place for a stroll, to just sit back and watch the glamorous visitors flock by. Another beautiful area to walk around is the Allées de la Liberté, a huge open space covered with plane trees and an imposing statue of the town’s founder, Lord Brougham. This space is used both for the archetypal French boules games, and the morning flower makets, and has a gorgeous vantage over the harbour. The nearby Cannes beach is a world favourite, epitomised by the image of Brigitte Bardot posing for the camera on its sands in 1953. The beach is the perfect place to top up your tan and watch the world go by.
The Old Roman Town of Canoïs Castrum, which climbs up the hill, is known locally as Le Suquet, and features the magnificent Notre-Dame de l’Espérance in its centre on Place de la Castre. Built in 1648, this spectacular Gothic church is an architectural masterpiece, with its wood panelling, and fresco by George Roux portraying the baptism of Christ. Other highlights are the statues of Saint Anne and Notre-Dame d'Esperance dating from the 15th and 18th centuries. The Château de la Castre, also in the Old Town, is the old Cannes castle is a magnificent fortress built to defend the city. Alongside the castle is the splendid Cistercian order’s St-Anne chapel. The castle was built in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Lérins monks. The stunning Tour de la Castre, a 12th century tower, is situated adjoining the castle and gives spectacular views over the area.
The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, on the Boulevard de la Croisette is the main venue for film premieres during the International Film Festival, but it also has many other uses during the year. This imposing modern structure is known colloquially as ‘The Bunker’ due to its grey, concrete-like appearance. The height of contemporary minimalism, this building was built in 1982 as a prestigious awards ceremony and conference venue, and also hosts a casino and nightclub. Not far from here is the Allée des Stars, where the handprints of the film world’s movers and shakers, including both actors and directors, are captured in the pavement cement for posterity.
Palm Beach Casino, built on the ruins of the medieval castle, Fort de la Croix, is a revelation in entertainment. Possessing not only a fantastic gaming hall, but also a nightclub, swimming pool and restaurant! The famous Le Croisette Casino Barrière de Cannes, on Boulevard de la Croisette is another fabulous venue, guaranteed to provide you with hours of gambling fun! The prestigious InterContinental Hôtel Carlton, also on La Croisette, is a favourite lodging of the rich and famous, and a great place to go for a drink as well. Built in 1911 this hotel has long held favour with the town’s glamorous visitors, and heralded as a historical monument, is an architectural masterpiece in its own right. Built in sumptuous, opulent style, the hotel’s exterior resembles an ornate wedding cake, with its little balconies, cornices and stucco pieces. Two black domes dominate the roof of the building, and are said to be modelled on the breasts of an infamous gypsy courtesan with whom the architect was besotted. The Rococo-style dining room of the hotel was designed with grandeur in mind; a beautifully elaborate ceiling tops a magnificent room, complete with regal-like colonnades. This hotel along with the luxury Majestic Barrière and Hôtel Martinez on La Croissette are the places to head for some serious celebrity-spotting!
