  • Cologne Landmarks

  • The Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), situated on the Domkloster, which dominates the Altstadt (Old Town) centre is the most visited attraction in the whole of the country. Attracting nearly two million visitors a year, it’s easy to see why this landmark is so popular with the tourists. Its Gothic magnitude is simply breathtaking, and the cathedral has played an intrinsic part in city life since its completion in 1880. At the time, its two 157m tall towers made the church the tallest structure in the world. In 1996 the cathedral was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and its esteemed status has continued ever since. The spires and stonework on the structure are magnificent, with its many arches and statues. Just as striking is the sumptuous interior, with its enormous vaulted nave and gigantic 30 tonne organ. Inside there are many fabulous artworks such as the 15th century altar painting of Cologne’s patron saints, and the carved Shrine of the Magi reported to hold the bones of the three kings from the Nativity. An added highlight of the church is its treasure chamber where many more of the Dom’s gems can be seen. The highlight of a visit to the cathedral has to be a climb up the 509 steps of the towers for a fantastic view over the city. Inside the towers you can also see the mesmerising bells, one of which is the largest free-swinging bell in the world.

The Groß St Martin (Great St Martin’s) church, situated on Lintgasse, is a magnificent and imposing Romanesque structure. It was originally built in the 12th and 13th centuries but needed extensive repair work following its damaged during the Second World War. The church has a spectacular tower and steeple surrounded by four smaller towers, completing the striking image. The other magnificent architectural structure in the area is the Rathaus (Town Hall), situated on Rathausplatz, which is a stunning, church-like building built in the 15th century. The beauty and intricacy of the carvings and statues, and the archways on the façade which were added in the 16th century, are simply awe-inspiring. Free guided tours of the Town Hall are held every Wednesday at 3pm, and the excavations of the former Roman governor’s 1st – 4th century Praetorium (palace) and a Roman sewer can also be seen underneath the building.

4711 Haus situated on Glockengasse, is the former home of the Mulhens family who created the famous 4711 Eau de Cologne with its distinctive turquoise bottles. Today the magnificent arcaded building with its colourful red pillars, which was rebuilt following its destruction in WW2, is used as an eau de cologne exhibition and perfumery.

Remnants of the old city wall can still be seen amongst the massive Ringstrassen (ring road) which follows the route of the demolished walls. The most noticeable examples of these are the giant gates (tor) which can be found along the road, the Hahnentor at Rudolfplatz, the Eigelsteintor at Ebertplatz, and the Severinstor at Chlodwigplatz. On Friesenstrasse there is also the remains of a turreted tower from the reinforcements, which also contains an ancient mosaic. The ring road area also contains the Belgisches Viertel (Belgian Quarter) which can be identified by the Flemish-inspired street names. This is one of the most upmarket areas of the city filled with picturesque buildings, chic restaurants and classy bars. The other spectacular architectural area in Cologne is the Media Park, a modern sprawling development situated, just outside the city centre, in complete contrast to the Old Town buildings. The modern skyscrapers and office blocks are home to media giants such as Sony Music and EMI, as well as the offices of TV and radio stations, hence the development’s name. The Köln Turm (tower) is a particular highlight of the area, as is the beautiful lake with a bridge spanning it, and Cinedom, the biggest cinema complex in the city. Nearby is the Hansa-Hochhaus (Hansa Skyscraper), situated on Am Hansaring, which in the 1920s at 65m was Europe’s tallest building, and now houses the highly popular Saturn music store.

The Stadtgarten (City Park) situated on Venloer Strasse is the metropolis’ oldest park, having been laid out in 1827-29. This is an oasis of calm in the heart of the city, abounding in wide paths, lustrous trees and lawns, full of walkers, runners and sun-worshippers. The park is also home to a fantastic restaurant, beer garden, and the renowned music venue, the Stadt. Other magnificent parks in the city include the 19th century Flora und Botanischer Garten (Flora and Botanic Garden) situated on Amsterdamer Strasse, with its beautiful wrought-iron gates, magnificent bedding plants, glasshouses of cacti, beautiful fountain and impressive Flora building. The tree-lined paths are a perfect place to go for a stroll, with their statues and sculptures, leading to the picturesque central lake containing a statue of Neptune. The other spectacular park in Cologne is the Rheinpark, located on the banks of the river in the Deutz district, which is the biggest park in the city at 125 acres. Its vast size is catered for by a miniature railway which transports visitors around the park. There is also an outdoor stage used for hosting evening concerts, as well as the renowned dancing fountains (Tanzbrunnen), and a delightful café. Within the Rheinpark is the km 689 Cologne Beach Club, situated on Rheinterrassen, opposite the café, which features a large area of sand running down to the river bank, with hammocks, deckchairs, DJs and bars, the perfect place to relax! Another pretty park is the Volksgarten (People’s Park), situated south of the city near the Eifelplatz, which features a beautiful lake on which you can hire pedalos and rowing boats, as well as a famous beer garden which has been in the same location since 1891.

Kölner Zoo located on Riehler Strasse holds more than 500 different species from continents across the world. The Elefantenpark, where you have the chance to view elephants in their natural environment, is a particular favourite with visitors, as is the island where 150 baboons live. Apes, reptiles, insects, a giant aquarium, and a South-East Asian jungle with birds can also all be found here. The other highly popular attraction in the city is the Kölner Seilbahn (cable car) situated on Riehler Strasse, which gives beautiful panoramic views over the city, the cathedral, and the river, as it passes over the Rhine, ending in the beautiful Rheinpark.
