Nice Landmarks
- The Old Town, with Le Château Hill at its summit and the picturesque park beneath, is a beautiful place to wander around, along with the magnificent winding streets of the town, full of treasures to unearth. The picturesque Port de Nice, at Quai du Commerce, is also a stunning place to walk around, with the small bobbing boats moored to the harbour. However, visitors must take a stroll down the exquisite Promenade des Anglais, the beautiful stretch of promenade, lined with palm trees, with an outlook on to the glittering waters. The promenade runs the length of the seafront and is always awash with crowds from all walks of life, the rollerbladers, the joggers, and those just taking it easy on the famous blue deckchairs that line the promenade. The Prom (as it is known locally) was built in the 1820s, and is now a mammoth eight-lane highway stretching for three miles! A well-known landmark on the Promenade des Anglais is the exquisite Hôtel Négresco, built in 1912 for Henri Négresco. Amongst its magnificent rooms, is the Salon Royale, which features a decadent 16 000 piece chandelier hanging from its ceiling. The hotel is also infamous for being the location of the death of American dancer Isadora Duncan, who died outside the building in 1927 when her scarf caught in the wheel of her car and broke her neck.
Les Ponchettes, are also a very interesting landmark of this seaside town, which are a double row of small houses with flat roofs, a very unusual architectural feature. With a mix of galleries, shops and restaurants, this is the place to go for some serious indulgence and also for a beautiful scenic walk. Once used as housing for fishermen, it is now a renowned feature of the local area.
There are many stunning Italianate churches in the city such as St-François-de-Paule, behind Opéra, and L’Eglise du Jésus in rue Droite. However, the most spectacular religious building has to be the Cathédrale Ste-Réparate, located in Place Rossetti, which was built in 1650. The cathedral has a magnificent tiled dome at its summit, and an 18th century tower adjoining it. Designed in sumptuous Baroque style, the interior is also as impressive as the façade, with ornate plasterwork, marble features and wood panelling. Another magnificent church is the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, in Place Pierre Gautier. Built in 1740, this spectacular building combines two architectural styles, with an impressive Baroque exterior, and ornate Rococo interior, which includes altarpieces by Jean Miralhet.
One sight not to miss is the stunning Palais de Justice, the Supreme Court, with its imposing grandeur and Corinthian columns. It was built in 1892 when Nice officially became part of France. The magnificent Notre-Dame is just as spectacular as its Parisian namesake, and is definitely one to visit. The city also holds ancient Roman remains in the form of an amphitheatre and baths.
Another must-see location is the magnificent 17th century house Palais Lascaris on rue Droite, which contains amongst other wonderful features, superb 18th century statues of Mars and Venus on its grand imposing staircase. The ceiling in the salon of the palace contains a spectacular trompe l’oeil by artists from Genoa. The building itself is made up of stunning architectural pieces, including stone columns and marble intricacies. An added feature of this palace is the recreated 18th century pharmacy on the ground floor.
A strinking landmark is the Monument aux Morts in Place Guynemer, which is an imposing memorial to the dead soldiers of Nice. This monument is one of the grandest memorials in France, and is constructed entirely from white stone, featuring a huge open space beneath, an enormous urn which holds the registration numbers of all the fallen soldiers, and bas-reliefs throughout. On further inspection, it becomes clear that there are thousands of names written on this light-flooded memorial which faces the sea, 3655 in actual fact, such that a visit to this memorial is a truly moving experience indeed
