  • Madrid Landmarks

  • Madrid is one of the world’s great capitals, a vibrant and thriving metropolis, with its perfect blend of history and modernity. At the heart of the city is the beautiful rectangular Plaza Mayor, the centre of the Old City. This arcaded centrepiece of the city is a major draw for all the citizens of the city, and is always humming with vibrancy and activity. Along with its statues, shops and bars this is the place to go for a piece of all the action. The square’s design was inspired by the courtyard of the magnificent royal palace, El Escorial (see below). It was originally completed in 1619, but following a fire in 1791 it was redesigned according to the layout we see today. Particularly striking features of the square are the engraved lampposts, the statue of Felipe III, and the spectacular murals of the zodiac signs on the Casa de la Panadería (bakers’ guild).

The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) situated on the spectacular Plaza de Oriente is a magnificent, grandiose building, which was the 18th century imperial palace of Spain, and is one of the biggest palaces in Europe. The gleaming golden façade of the building is simply awe-inspiring with its Ionic columns and Tuscan pilasters. The main staircase is just as phenomenal as is the splendid Hall of Columns, the sumptuous Gala Dining Room with its breathtaking ceiling frescoes and the regal throne room. The royal pharmacy in the palace is also highly impressive with its pestles, mortars and jars which fill the golden shelves. One of the palace’s most impressive features is its sumptuous gardens, the Jardines de Campo del Moro, with its magnificent avenues, palms and chestnut trees. El Escorial located on San Lorenzo del Escorial, King Felipe II’s palace-cum-monastery, is another fantastic royal residence to explore. The king built the palace as a mausoleum to his father Carlos I and took over thirty years to complete, which finally occurred in 1595. The magnificent granite structure, which dominates the foothills of the surrounding Sierra de Guadarrama, with its domes and spires, is truly a sight to behold. Comprising of a palace, basilica, monastery, seminary and a library with a spectacular barrel-vaulted frescoed ceiling, as well as an awe-inspiring main staircase, the internal Courtyard of the Kings and the priceless pieces of art housed here, all make this one royal site you do not want to miss!

The Metrópolis, located on the bustling Gran Vía, is one of the archetypal symbols of Madrid with its intricate statues and stonework. Designed in 1905, this spectacular Neo-Baroque building features a stunning dome decorated with golden wreaths and topped by a winged statue of victory. The Palacio de Comunicaciones (General Post Office), located on Plaza de Cibeles, is another magnificent architectural sight in the city. Featuring an awe-inspiring stained-glass roof, this spectacular structure completed in 1919, incorporates architectural styles from Spanish Plateresque to Art Deco. The Torre Picasso located on Plaza de Pablo Ruíz Picasso, at 157m high, is the tallest building in the city. It was inaugurated in 1989 and designed by the same architect as that of the tragic World Trade Centre in New York. Another phenomenal piece of design is the iconic Puerta de Europa (Gateway to Europe) situated on Plaza de Castilla, consisting of twenty-six storeys of leaning towers of glass and metal, Madrid’s contemporary version of a triumphal arch built in 1996. These structures are the first high-rise leaning buildings in the world, and get their name from the arch like image they create, and their location at the northern end of Madrid’s business district. The Palacio Longoría, located on Calle de Fernando VI is the most spectacular Art Nouveau building in Madrid. The walls, windows and balconies are all filled with sumptuous florid decorations of plants, flowers and tree roots, as well as featuring opulent curves.

The city also has many beautiful gardens including the serene Parque del Oeste on Paseo del Pintor Rosales, featuring the Temple of Debod and cable cars; Parque Juan Carlos I situated within the grounds of the Campo de las Naciones, with a spectacular river and the biggest fountain in Spain featuring 300 jets; and Parque de Berlin located on Calle del Príncipe de Vergara, featuring original sections of the Berlin Wall. The Parque del Retiro, located on Calle Alcalá, is a magnificent park unlike any other; it abounds with statues, sculptures, follies, lakes and formal gardens, as well as its breathtaking centrepiece, the Monument to Alfonso XII which surrounds the boating lake, a huge colonnaded edifice with a statue of the king crowning it. The lush Real Jardin Botánico (Botanical Gardens) located on Plaza de Murillo, with its three ascending terraces, is filled with beautiful fountains, a herbarium, a rose garden, a 100-year-old tree and more than 1200 tropical species grown in the Exhibition Greenhouse.
