Monaco Landmarks
- The city has the perfect blend of a glamorous beach resort combined with an elegant metropolis, meaning that there is a huge variety of landmarks to explore. The original, old area of the city is called Monaco-Ville, which is situated on a huge, sheer cliff-face called the Rock of Monaco. In this area of the city you will find the Palais Princier, the seat of the Grimaldi Family, the Cathédrale and all of the city’s museums. The beautiful Palais Princier situated on Place du Palais, is testament to the wealth of the ruling family, with its lavish furniture and priceless frescoes pervading the state apartments. The castle-palace was built in the 17th century, although the towers attached to it date from 1215, and is protected by French police under the Monégasque constitution. The changing of the guarding sentries every day at 11.55am is a particular attraction of the palace, the home of the world’s oldest reigning monarchy.
Another popular tourist attraction of the area is the ornate Cathédrale de Monaco, located on rue Colonel Bellando del Castro. Set upon its rocky outcrop, this cathedral is an impressive Neo-Romanesque masterpiece. The cream-coloured La Turbie stone of the building’s exterior adds to the impact of this 19th century structure, as does the altarpiece designed by Louis Bréa. Other great artefacts inside the cathedral include the screens also by Bréa, La Pietà and St-Nicholas. The tombs of past princes and bishops can also be found here, including that of the deeply-mourned Princess Grace. The area of Monaco-Ville also contains a warren of little streets, where many picturesque villas with elegant façades and beautiful fountains can be found.
The best known area of Monaco though has to be Monte-Carlo, with its fabulous marina and decadent surroundings. The quays area of La Condamine is a particular star-spotter’s haven, with the luxury yachts lining the marina, and the fashionistas strutting along the promenades. The quays were built by Albert I, and then added to by Albert II with the building of a watersports pool. However the most famous attraction of Monte-Carlo has to be the Casino, located on Place du Casino. This world-renowned casino has drawn many people to its tables in its time, including many celebrities. However, its most famous gambler has to be Charles Deville Wells, who in 1891 turned $400 into $40 000 in just three days! He was the man who inspired the song The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte-Carlo. The casino was designed in 1878 by Charles Garnier, and is situated on a terrace, with a beautiful fountain in its forecourt, and gives fantastic vistas over the city. The casino still has its Belle Epoque décor, with roulette played in its decadent Salons Européens and blackjack played in the equally sumptuous Salons Privés. A more unusual feature of the casino is the nude female forms smoking cigars that adore the Salon Rose bar ceiling.
The beautiful Jardin Exotique on Boulevard du Jardin Exotique, is another attraction of this fabulous area, where plants normally grown in much sunnier climes are displayed. These gardens are said to be one of the best in Europe, with their fantastic collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants. Within the gardens is the Grotte de l’Observatoire (Observatory Cave), filled with stalagmites, where prehistoric animals and humans lived 200 000 years ago.
