St Tropez Landmarks
- Saint-Tropez may not be renowned for its landmarks, but it still has many beautiful places to visit and stroll around. The Eglise Notre-Dame de l’Assumption located on Rue de l’Eglise, is a landmark of this small town; with its striking yellow dome and terracotta bricks, it has featured in many a painting. Built in the 19th century in the Baroque style, this church really is a beautiful sight to behold. The church features many busts of saints, including one of St Torpès, the man the town is named after.
The Citadelle located on rue de la Citadelle, is another of the town’s most visited sights. This hexagonal building was built in the 16th century, to defend the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, and is an imposing stone structure. Climb the ramparts of the Citadelle for spectacular views over the town, the gulf, and the surrounding areas. In the summer the Citadelle hosts a number of cultural events, including the Classical Music Festival.
The Chapelle de la Miséricorde on rue Miséricorde, is a magnificent chapel, located in the old town area near the port, and is a spectacular example of 17th century architecture. The striking tall stone walls are set off by the intricately-tiled roof which contains a fantastic blend of blues, greens and golds. The interior is just as magical with its quaint pews and altar pieces.
To experience the distinct atmosphere and vibrancy of the town, head to Place des Lices, considered the central hub of St-Tropez. The square contains many striking pieces of architecture, cafés and crowds of people. The Marché des Lices (Lices Market) is held here every Saturday, where you are bound to pick up a few bargains.
Quartier de la Ponche, located in the shadow of the Citadelle, is thought of as the most striking section of St. Tropez, due to its unspoilt beauty. The warren of small cobblestone streets creates an intimate, picturesque atmosphere, as do the striking orange and brown coloured tall buildings. The port lanterns hanging from the buildings also add to the intimate feel of the area when they are lit at night. The nearby beach and port, Port de Pêche, is a popular spot for fishing in the beautiful surroundings, and for watching the sunset over the picturesque quarter.
The historic Vieux Port (Old Port) is one of the most bustling areas in St-Tropez. The fishing boats are docked in this area, which is an echo of the town’s role in bygone days as a fishing village. However these boats now also share the port with the celebrities’ luxury yachts and sailboats. The Old Port also has two intriguing watch towers at either ends of the harbour, La Tour Vielle and La Tour du Portalet which are both interesting to explore. You must also visit the beautiful quay area of Quai Jean-Jaurès, whose beautiful vistas have inspired artists for over a century, including most notably Paul Signac. The picturesque pastel-coloured houses of the quay, and the boats on the water in front of them, can be best viewed from the harbour breakwater Môle Jean Réveille. Here you can get a fantastic view of the city, including the Citadelle in the background. On Quai Jean-Jaurès you can also see local artists touting their work, as well as some of the fantastic selection of cafés and shopping opportunities available throughout the Old Port.
La Madrague, located on route des Canebiers, near plage des Canebiers, is also a popular tourist attraction. The former home of the most famous St-Tropez resident, Brigitte Bardot, attracts a flock of tourists in a pique of intrigue over the life of the celebrated and troubled actress.
