  • Milan History

  • The first known inhabitancy of Milan was in approximately 400 BC by the Celtic Insubres. In 200 BC the Romans conquered this site, and in 293 CE it was proclaimed the capital of the Western Roman Empire, when the empire was subdivided. In 539 CE barbarians from Northern Europe and Asia invaded the city, and Milan lost its role as capital. In the 1100s, Milan played a pivotal role in the Comuni movement, which aimed to fight against the dominance of the German emperors. The movement succeeded in Milan, and the city was ruled democratically during this time. Democracy in Milan was brought to an end when the powerful Visconti family seized power. They ruled from 1277 to 1447, and brought Milan the international reputation that it is known for today. Under their leadership construction of the Duomo and Castle Sforzesco began, bringing great prestige to the city. In 1450 Francesco Sforza took control of the city. The Sforza family continued to rule in Milan for nearly one hundred years. During this time the Renaissance Movement took hold in Italy, and great artists and writers made Milan their residence, including Bramante and Da Vinci.

In 1535 the Spanish took control of Northern Italy, and they ruled Milan for nearly two hundred years. This was a black time in the city’s history, there was no architectural or economic development, and the Plague was rife throughout 1630. In the early 18th century the great European wars brought the city under the control of Austria and its ruling family, the Hapsburgs. Under their reign Milan experienced a revival in all areas of society in the latter part of the 18th century. In this period La Scala theatre was founded and many private palaces were commissioned. Following the French Revolution of 1789, Milan was taken over by France. This was a time of brief but prosperous activity, with town planning schemes initiated and the building of some of the big public works, such as the Porte (city gates). The Austrians regained control of Italy in 1815 following France’s defeat in the Napoleonic Wars, however the Austrian leaders were no longer open to reforming Milan as in the past. Consequently the city rebelled against their rulers in 1848, and became a part of the Savoy Kingdom, which following the unification in 1861 became, the Kingdom of Italy.

As a united country, Italy had much more weight as an economic force, and Milan became an economic and industrial centre. The centre of the city soon became home to many banks and financial companies, changing the face of the city landscape forever. This newfound wealth caused social unrest amongst the working classes who were unable to share in this prosperity. Class tensions were typical of this era, and provided the foundations for the emergence of the Fascist regime. In 1922 Mussolini took control of Italy, and began his Fascist reign of oppression. Under his rule extravagant buildings such as the Stazione Centrale (central station) were built. During WW2 Milan suffered extensive damage from bombing and following Mussolini’s downfall in 1944, led Italy in its rebuilding. Following this revival there was an influx of people from the south of Italy into Milan, seeking to cash in on Milan’s economic prosperity. Consequently, prosperity continued, and has meant that in the present day Milan has become known as Italy’s centre for business and fashion, as well as a major player in the international arena.
