  • Cologne Museums

  • The Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Roman-Germanic Museum) situated on Roncalliplatz, is a fascinating museum depicting the city’s history during the time the Romans lived there. The museum contains the magnificent Dionysius mosaic, dedicated to the Roman god of wine, as well as exhibits on all aspects of Roman life, such as clothing and jewellery, to engineering and bridge foundations. The famous Colonia glass is also to be found here, with many pieces all showing the typical ‘snake thread’ decoration.

The Imhoff-Stollwerck-Museum/Schokoladenmuseum (Chocolate Museum) situated on Rheinauhafen, is one of the most popular museums in the city, housed in the former customs office since 2000. This museum gives visitors the opportunity to discover the history of chocolate and how it is made, from the cacao trees in the tropical greenhouse, to the production line spread throughout the museum. You also have the opportunity to see how truffles and novelty chocolates are produced through specialised procedures. As well as the divine chocolate fountain, samples of your favourite treats are also given out, not to mention the copious amounts of delectable treats available from the shop and café.

The Deutsches Sport- und Olympia-Museum (German Sport and Olympic Museum), located on Rheinauhafen, is a fantastic museum which tracks the history of sport from the athletes of Ancient Greece to the complex technology of today’s racing cars. Pack to the rafters with memorabilia, including kit and equipment, this is the place to head for sports-mad tourists. Displays of the two Olympic Games that have been held in Germany, those in Berlin in 1936 and Munich in 1972, are also on show. Highlights of the museum include the hands-on exhibits such as the bike you can ride through a wind tunnel, having a go at the punchbags in the boxing ring, and crouching in a four-man bobsleigh. The museum also features a sports field on the roof, where you can have a game of football whilst taking in the sights of the city.

The Kölnisches Stadtmuseum (Cologne City Museum) is located in the old city armoury on Zeughausstrasse with its characteristic red and white shutters. The history of the city is depicted here from medieval times to the current day. Highlights of the museum are the exhibits of the city council’s extravagant silverware, a 6m soil profile from an archaeological dig portraying the city’s past, and a moving sculpture dedicated to those who died in WW1, entitled Cologne Peasant, which is covered with nails individually hammered in by Cologne’s citizens.
