  • Dubai Museums

  • Although not renowned for its museums and galleries, Dubai does have a number of interesting and delightful establishments on offer. Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, the former monarchy residence built for Sheikh Maktoum Bin Hasher Al Maktoum in 1896, is now a museum of the history of early Dubai. Located near Port Rashid, the museum contains a number of interesting exhibits of photographs, fishing and pearling, coins, stamps and historic documents. The building itself is a great architectural masterpiece, made of coral stone and covered in lime and sand-coloured plaster, this structure is a brilliant example of late 19th century Arabian design. Highlights include the arched doorways, sculpted window overhangs, vaulted high-beamed ceilings and carved trellis screens.

However the pièce de resistance are the four barjeel (wind-towers) which top the building. Since 1971 the Al Fahidi Fort has housed the Dubai Museum whose many fabulous exhibits are mainly displayed in the underground galleries that were built in 1995. The museum gives a multi-media overview of the development of Dubai, as well as displays depicting life in the city before its oil-driven expansion. There are many fine artefacts on display such as finds from the archaeological sites at Al Qusais dating from the Iron Age and those at Jumeria, dating from the 6th century.

The Municipality Museum located on Baniyas Road was the former headquarters of the Dubai Municipality, but in 1999 the building was restored and converted into a museum charting municipal history. The Nasser Bin Abdullatif Al Serkal Building hosts a small motor museum made up of vehicles amassed by the famous trading family of the Al Serkals. There are many rare vintage motors on display including US military Willys Jeeps, the Ford V8 Deluxe, a 1957 Buick Special, a Chevrolet Fleetline as well as a collection of Model T Fords.

The magnificent Godolphin Gallery, located on Muscat Road in Nad Al Sheba displays the spectacular Dubai World Cup trophy, one of the biggest horseracing trophies in the world, standing 74cm tall and weighing 5.2kg, and covered in 18-carat gold plate. The gallery is a museum of the Godolphin racing stable set up in 1994 by the Maktoum rulers. Legendary horses are remembered here, such as big-time international winner Lammtarra.  Gallery One located within Madinat Jumeirah, exhibits paintings, mixed-media art and photography by local and international artists. Past featured artists have included renowned 1960s photographer Terry O’Neill.

The Creative Art Centre, located on Jumeira Road features Arabian-themed pictures and maps, antiques, ceramics, and jewellery from the UAE and Oman; the Green Art Gallery, located on Street 51, displays art work by international artists of the Arab world; and Dubai International  Centre, which displays work by local artists. The Arabic Calligraphy Museum and The Stamp Museum, both located in Bastakiya, are another two interesting museums. The Majlis Gallery located at the Al Fahidi roundabout, Bastakiya, displays pieces by local and international artists, of mainly watercolours and sculptures. The Hunar Gallery located on Street 49, Rashidiya, displays fine art from all over the world, such as intricate-decorated Japanese tiles, Belgian pewter and glassware, and Persian paintings and modern art.
