  • The Musée du Costume et de la Dentelle, located on Rue de Violette, is dedicated to one of the city’s most profitable exports, Belgian lace. The talent of the Belgian lacemakers has been an invaluable contribution to the country’s commercial market since the 12th century, and this museum is a portrayal of this history and the methods involved in the craft. Magnificent costumes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries are displayed, showing how lace has contributed to fashion throughout the centuries, as well as drawers of antique lace from the various schools of lacemaking in France, Italy and Flanders.

The BELvue Museum, which contains the Musée de la Dynastie located on Place des Palais, is an imposing 18th century building with a Neo-Classical façade, facing on to the Palace Square. This museum charts the history of the Belgian royal dynasty through paintings, documents and other regal memorabilia. Since 1992 the museum has been housed in the former Hôtel Bellevue, which is located next to the royal residence, Palais Royal. In 1998 a display dedicated to the highly respected King Baudouin I was added following his death in 1993. Official portraits and informal photographs are both on display, giving an intriguing glimpse into the private life of the monarchy. Each room is dedicated to a specific sovereign and era, with a bust of the monarch at the entrance to the room.

The Musée des Instrumentents de Musique (MIM), otherwise known as Musée Instrumental, is located on Rue Montagne de la Cour in a magnificent Art Nouveau glass and wrought-iron building once used as the department store, Old England, which it moved to in 2000. The domed gazebo on the roof and the turret at the building’s head, are amongst the unusual features of this listed building. The museum’s collection dates from the 1800s when the state acquired 80 unusual and antique instruments. This was then doubled in 1876 when King Léopold II donated his gift of 97 Indian musical instruments from a maharajah to the museum. A museum to hold all these pieces opened in 1877, and by 1924 the collection had grown to contain 3300, and was considered one of the best instrumental museums in the world. Today the museum boasts over 6000 artefacts made up of wind, string and keyboard instruments dating from medieval times to the present day. Star sights are the prototype instruments by Adolpho Sax, the Belgian inventor of the saxophone; mini violins and a violin maker’s studio.

Musée Charlier located on Avenue des Arts, is an intimate, relaxing museum, which was the former home of entrepreneur Henri van Custem. When he died his friend, the sculptor Charlier, moved his art collection in to the house and this was then left to the city as a museum following his death in 1925. The museum contains an astonishing array of art, sculptures and furnishings, one of the finest collections in the country. Paintings include those by artists such as the famous Belgian artist, Antoine Wiertz, and James Ensor; whilst there are also sculptures by Charlier himself, and a magnificent assortment of porcelain, glassware, chinoiserie and silverware. Other star sights are the tapestries which adorn the staircases and the first floor, and the collections of Louis XV and Louis XVI-style furniture.

The Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée (CBBD), the Museum of Comic Strip Art located on rue des Sables, pays homage to one of Belgium’s greatest passions. Many famous Belgian creations are displayed here, such as Tintin, who first made his entrance in 1929, and the Smurfs who debuted in 1958, but comic strip innovations from other countries are also portrayed. The museum is spread over 3 levels in a magnificent Art-Nouveau building. There are displays which track the process of constructing a comic strip, from pencil sketches and initial ideas, to the final printed product, as well as a collection of over 6000 original plates, and an archive of photographs and artefacts. The museum also puts on regular displays of famous cartoonists and animation studios. The entrance hall, featuring a huge model of the famous Tintin rocket, and the life-size cartoon sets are amongst the most popular sights of the museum, as is the Comic Library, which contains hundreds of old comic strips, artist’s equipment, biographies, comic novels and photographs. Another popular sight is the humorous models of Tintin and his companions, Professor Calculus and Captain Haddock, in bright orange astronaut suits at the entrance to the first floor displays.

Musée de l’Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique, located on Rue Vautier in Parc Léopold has long been renowned for its spectacular collection of iguanodon skeletons dating back 250 million years. However the museum also contains magnificent interactive displays and fascinating educational exhibits exploring all aspects of natural history, as well as whale skeletons and those of other aquatic animals.

The Musée Royal de l’Armée et d’Histoire Militaire is one of the wonderful museums located within Parc du Cinquantenaire. The museum contains a spectacular aviation display containing many magnificent aircraft, as well as exhibits on the military history of Belgium dating from 1700 to the present time, which includes weapons, uniforms, decorations and paintings. Other displays chart the 1830 battle for independence, the First and Second World Wars and the Resistance.
