Madrid Museums
- As well as its fabulous architecture, Madrid also has a huge number of fascinating museums, such as the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales located on Plaza de las Descalzas which is not only a museum but also a working convent as well. The museum is full of decorative art such as paintings, frescoes, sculptures, tapestries, tiles, vestments and holy gold and silver vessels. The Grand Staircase is an absolutely phenomenal sight, with its trompe-l’oeils and spectacular frescoes. The Royal Balcony and Upper Cloister are also wonderful and filled with many spectacular works of art.
The Museo de América located on Avenida Reyes Católicos, is another popular museum in the city. This museum is reported to be one of Madrid’s best museums, and contains more than 20 000 pieces from the Americas, including ceramics, textiles, tools and sculptures. One of the most magnificent pieces is the golden Caciques Statue originating from Colombia over a thousand years ago. Other spectacular pieces are the huípil, a multi-coloured embroidered tunic from Guatemala, as well as a replica wooden hut Jaburu’s House, and a fascinating Paracas Mummy from Peru dating from between 400 BCE and 100 CE.
The Museo Cerralbo, located within the former palace of the 17th Marqués de Cerralbo on Calle de Ventura Rodríguez, holds a spectacular collection of over 30 000 artistic treasures including paintings, sculptures, glassware and porcelain, collected over the years by the Marquis to beautify his home. Star sights include the Nativity by Andrea della Robbia located in the Porcelain Room, Caballero’s History of Dance which adorns the dome of the spectacular ballroom, and the Ecstasy of St Francis by El Greco situated within the Sacristy.
The Museo Arqueológico Nacional located on Calle Serrano is a magnificent archaeological museum established by Queen Isabel II in 1867 which houses artefacts from the majority of the world’s ancient civilisations, especially those on the Iberian Peninsula. Star sights of the huge museum include a 4th century carved bust of the Iberian Lady of Elche, a Roman mosaic floor depicting the months and seasons, an Islamic stone carving from 11th century Zaragoza, a breathtaking 7th century Recesvinth crown from Toledo, and an ivory processional cross from a church in Léon in 1063. Other areas of interest are the collections of Iron Age and Bronze Age finds from the Canary Islands, and those from ancient Greece.
The Casa-Museo de Lope de Vega is located within the former home of Spain’s most famous playwright on Calle de Cervantes. The large brick house contains magnificent authentic period features, such as heavy wooden shutters, creaking staircases and beamed ceilings. The rooms are recreated to look how they would when de Vega lived here from 1610-35, based on an inventory he made of the contents of his house. Amongst the highlights of the museum are the dramatist’s bedroom, the book-filled study where he wrote most of his plays, and the thick wall hangings in the embroidery room.
The Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas located on Calle de Montalbán, is a spectacular collection of furniture, silverware, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, tapestries, clocks, toys and musical instruments. The museum is arranged in recreated rooms from different eras, which depict everyday Spanish life from the 16th to 20th centuries. Star sights include the Gothic bedroom, the Valencian kitchen decorated with nearly 2000 hand-painted azulejo tiles, a series of Flemish tapestries and the collection of 19th century fans.
