Monaco Museums
- Although Monaco is renowned as a city of indulgence and extravagance, it surprisingly does have a large amount of fascinating museums for all you culture-lovers to enjoy! The Musée des Souvenirs Napoléoniens et Archives Historiques du Palais is located within the Palais Princier on Place du Palais, and is the official palace museum. Within the museum visitors will find displays on local history as well as Napoleonic exhibits. A highlight of the museum is the huge family tree which shows the ties between the Grimaldis and the Bonapartes. There are many busts of Napoleon scattered throughout the museum, with the whole ground floor of the museum dedicated just to him.
Of particular appeal to those interested in prehistoric history is the Musée d’Anthropologie Préhistorique, which is situated within the Jardin Exotique on Boulevard du Jardin Exotique. The museum was founded by Prince Albert I, and here you will find a large assortment of Stone Age tools, models and bones, which are guaranteed to fascinate.
The spectacular Musée Océanographique on Avenue St-Martin, is located precariously on the top of a sheer cliff, dramatically hovering over the Mediterranean. However, the ornate sandstone building is the not the primary attraction here, but the museum within it. Established in 1910 by Prince Albert I, the museum is renowned as having one of the best aquariums in the world, and also plays a vital role as a scientific research institute. The aquarium contains a spectacular collection of rare oceanic animals and plants, whilst other displays in the museum include collections of shells, coral and pearls and an impressive shark tank. A highlight of the museum has to be the life-size model of a giant squid! The famous marine explorer Jacques Cousteau was the director of this museum for over thirty years, up until 1988. The bright yellow submarine outside the museum is a pleasant welcome to this fascinating museum, whilst the roof terrace of the museum gives a magnificent view of the coast below.
The Musée National des Poupées et Automates (dolls and robots) is located within a beautiful villa built by Charles Garnier, situated on Avenue Princess Grace. The villa is set within a spectacular rose garden filled with sculptures, the perfect place for quiet contemplation, whilst the museum in itself is an absolutely fascinating experience. Filled with dolls from the 18th and 19th centuries, this is a toy-lover’s haven, and the huge collection of working robots is sure to add to the excitement! The robots are switched on daily, and some are opened to show their intricate workings.
The Monte-Carlo story (Monaco Le Film) is located in the Terrasses du Parking du Chemin du Pêcheur on the cliffs of Monaco-Ville. Situated next to the Oceanographic museum, this multimedia show depicts the origins, history and future of the Principality. There is also a Cinema Museum which is free of charge and presents “Monte-Carlo au Cinéma”, a collection of authentic posters by the masters of the cinematography, which pay tribute to Monte-Carlo.
