  • The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, located on Prinzregentstraße, is one of the biggest history museums in the country, and contains pieces ranging from the Classical period to the 19th century. The main part of the museum is made up of the royal collection donated to the country by Maximilian II in 1855. Highlights of the museum include the Christmas Crib, an 18th century Neapolitan crib in which life-like models intertwine with the rocks and realistic architecture; Judith with the Head of Holofernes, a 16th century alabaster sculpture depicting Judith as a nude; and a statue of St Mary Magdalene surrounded by sculpted angels. Other key sights are a magnificent wooden model of Munich commissioned by Albrecht V, an 18th century harpsichord, and interiors taken from locations throughout Bavaria, such as the Gothic Weberstube from Augsburg.

There are also many museums located within the city’s Museum District such as the Paläontologisches Museum (Palaeontology Museum), located on Richard-Wagner-Strasse, which has been housed in its unusual 19th century setting since 1950. Skeletons of large mammals are among the highlights of the museum which displays the Bavarian Palaeontology Collection. The museum’s collections are displayed according to theme, where the star sights include skeletons of a woolly rhinoceros and giant tortoise found in Bavaria and fossilised palm trees depicting the existence of a tropical climate in Bavaria in prehistoric times.

The Deutsches Museum, located on Museuminsel (island), is one of the oldest and biggest museums of technology and engineering in the world. The museum was established in 1903 and contains over 17 000 exhibits spanning the history of technology and industry and including its greatest inventions. The museum is also the location of the biggest technology library in the world. Highlights of the museum include its musical instruments, such as an early German organ and a 17th century inlaid harpsichord, the Pharmaceutics section, which contains a magnificent model of a human cell enlarged 350 000 times, and the Zeiss Planetarium, one of the world’s top planetariums. Here an artificial sky is projected on to the roof of the dome 15m across, where you can view images of the sun, moon and planets and 8900 stars. Other key sights are the transport section, the Physics section, the Telecommunications section and the Decorative Arts section.

Stadtmuseum (City Museum) located on St-Jakobs-Platz is housed in six inter-connecting buildings and divided into unique sections which each display a different theme. The permanent collections include exhibits of weapons, crafts, folk art, townscapes and posters, which are joined by the collections of the Puppet Theatre, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Photographic Museum and the Fashion Museum. Rare film archives can be viewed in the Film Museum, whilst interesting design features can be seen in the Urban Interiors section. The highlight of this museum is the display of the ten Moriskentänzer (Morris Dancers) made in approximately 1480 for the Old Town Hall.

The Zentrum für außergewöhnliche Museen (Museum of Unusual Objects) located on Westenriederstraße, is one of the strangest museums you will ever encounter, but is nonetheless absolutely fascinating! The museum was established in 1984 as the world’s first museum of chamber pots, portraying their development over 2000 years, and displaying weird and wonderful porcelain chamber pots such as those in the shape of gravy boats. The museum has now expanded to include a collection of the artefacts of Elizabeth of Austria, as well as the slightly more gruesome chastity belts and instruments of torture. Collections of corkscrews, Easter bunnies and pedal cars are also on display, as well as an enormous collection of perfumes in the Aroma Section.

The Völkerkunde-museum (State Museum of Ethnography) located on Maximilianstraße in a striking stone building, contains the largest ethnographic collection in the country outside Berlin. The collection dates from 1782, and now contains over 150 000 items to do with the life and culture of non-European peoples. Emphasis is placed on communities from China, Japan, Peru and East and Central Africa but there are many other nationalities represented.
