  • Paris Art Galleries

  • One of the most famous art galleries in the world, mention the Louvre, and you automatically think of it being the home of one of the most renowned paintings of all time; Leonardo Di Vinci’s Mona Lisa. However, the Museé du Louvre has much more to offer than just this one painting. It houses one of the largest and most diverse collections of paintings and sculptures in the world. Displayed on four floors, the collection ranges from paintings from the 12th to 19th centuries, to Italian and French sculptures and beyond. The entrance to the gallery itself is a sight to behold; a huge, glass pyramid, now made even more famous by its pivotal role in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. To view the Mona Lisa itself, make sure you get there early in the morning, as the crowds tend to build up very quickly. The Venus de Milo is another famous piece; this 2nd century sculpture of a Greek goddess is a fantastic sight to behold, dramatically floodlit at the end of a dark corridor. These are just two of the amazing pieces of art that are on display here, and you need a good day to explore the whole gallery properly.

The Museé d’Orsay is another magnificent collection of pieces of art, displaying pieces ranging from 1848-1914. The building itself which houses this gallery used to be a railway station, and is just as striking, with its spectacular grandeur certainly not have been lost in its conversion. The Museé d’Orsay has many famous pieces, but most prominent amongst them are the collection by Vincent Van Gough, including his world-famous Bedroom at Arles (1889), and Monet’s Blue Waterlillies (1919).

For a more contemporary art experience, head to the extravagant Centre Georges Pompidou. A piece of modern art itself, when this National Museum of Modern Art opened in 1977 it divided the nation between those who thought it was grotesque, and those who thought it spectacular. Upon approaching this building, you are struck by the feeling of having wandered onto the set of a science fiction set! This gigantic building dominates the small Place Georges Pompidou it is located in, with its huge technicolour pipes attached to the outside of the building, and the crimson, snake-like, external lift which zig-zags up its side. Inside, the collection includes more than 1400 pieces, covering all the major art movements of the 20th century, including work by Matisse and Miró.

Situated in the popular Marais district, the Museé Picasso is a much-loved attraction for both natives and tourists. Housed in the lovingly restored Hôtel Salé, this collection is an amazing celebration of the famous artist’s work. There are many of his pieces displayed here, including those from his Cubist period. His sculptures can be found throughout, but most spectacularly in the garden and courtyard. There is also a display of Picasso’s own private collection of others’ work.
