Paris Landmarks
- The city has so many world-renowned landmarks, that it is impossible to see them all in a short trip. If time is limited, choosing to view any one of the many fabulous sites will be an experience of wonder and beauty. However, no trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Soaring 1050ft above the Parisian skyline, this tower is one of the most definitive symbols of the beautiful city. The perfect symmetry of the tower amazed visitors when it was opened in 1889, and continues to do so to this day. Standing beneath under the mammoth underbelly of this enormous structure is an awe-inspiring experience. The sheer magnitude of the tower utterly takes your breath away. Visitors are able to climb the 1060 steps to the upper second level of the tower, the location of the Jules Verne restaurant, or take the lazier option of using the lift. Queues for tickets are very long and visitors can avoid a longer waiting period if they use the stairs. On the third level at 899 feet, the viewing gallery gives magnificent views over the whole of Paris, and on a clear day you can see for up to 50 miles. Nearby the Trocadéro has a magnificent series of fountains that are beautifully floodlit at night.
Another emblem of Paris is the spectacular Arc de Triomphe. Standing as the centrepiece of twelve converging avenues, (in L’Etoile/The Star), this arch dominates the city’s skyline. Built to commemorate Napoleon’s victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, the building was not actually finished until 1836. Visitors today are able to climb to the top of the arch for fantastic views down the world-famous Champs Elysees, all the way to the Grand Arche of La Défense in the distance. La Défense is a modern area made up of tall skyscrapers and futuristic-style buildings. The focal point is La Grande Arche which looks like a huge cube with the centre removed. Visitors are able to ascend this structure as well, and the inverted view back to the Arc de Triomphe is just as spectacular.
The area of Montmartre is renowned for its bohemian past, lent to it by the famous artists that lived here, but the basilica of Sacré-Coeur, raised up at the highest point of the city, lends an air of majesty to its surroundings. The white domes of this dramatically imposing building are stark against the Parisian blue sky, and a climb up to the terrace at the foot of the basilica gives one of the most spectacular free views over the city. A walk through Montmartre shows that the area is still alive and well today as an art centre, and in Place du Tertre there are many artists displaying their creations. A cathedral that is even more famous is that of Notre-Dame. Located on Ile de la Cité, an island on the Seine, this ornate structure is truly inspiring. It has twin-dominating towers on either side, which rise up 226 feet above the Paris sky. Finished in 1334, the building took nearly 200 years to complete, and is a masterpiece in architecture and design.
The glowing golden dome atop the Hôtel des Invalides is recognisable on any vista across Paris. The most famous resident of this hotel, built to house wounded soldiers, is Napoleon, who is buried in the crypt below the Dome Church. Another famous church is that of Saint Sulpice situated on the Left Bank, in the St-Germain area, home to one of the largest organs in the world, which has more than 6500 pipes.
A relaxing stroll can be had in the beautiful Jardin des Tuileries, which span a huge area along the length of the Seine, from the Louvre to Place de la Concorde. The numerous walkways are lined with chestnut and lime trees, and many ornate bronze figurines are scattered throughout the park.
Those who are looking for a more action-packed experience should head to the world-famous Disneyland Resort Paris, which has something to offer all ages. Situated just a short train ride away from the city, the park, and the new adjoining Disney Studios, have fantastic rides and amazing performances (including stunt car racing!) to suit the preferences of every visitor.
