  • Paris Museums

  • Paris is a culture-lover’s dream, with more museums than you could possibly see in a lifetime. However there are some that you should definitely not miss, and foremost of these is the Museé de l’Armée, a part of Hôtel des Invalides, which displays France’s fiercely proud military history. This is one of the biggest military collections in the world, and is able keep visitors entranced for hours. There are many interesting artefacts housed in this museum including Napoleon’s campaign tent and stuffed dog, and fascinating exhibits ranging from ancient to modern times.

Known as the capital of fashion, the city is also home to a museum in tribute of its most famous industry. The Musée National de la Mode et du Textile, situated in Rue de Rivoli houses a collection of some of the finest designs ever made. The displays, ranging from the 17th century up to modern day haute couture, showcase a portion of the huge amount of glorious creations of the city’s designers’, including many gowns once worn by the rich and famous.

For those more interested in science, the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, is the place to visit. Situated in the Jardin des Plantes on Rue Cuvier, the museum has an amazing collection of fossils, skeletons and gemstones, including a spectacular display on the history of evolution.

The traditional home of Paris’ artists has always been Montmartre, and the Museé de Montmartre on Rue Cortot is testament to this. The house that the museum is in was once the dwelling of several famous artists, including Renoir, Utrillo, and Dufy, and visitors can view the history of the house through the many photographs and documents. The museum’s large collection of drawings, artefacts and memorabilia also charts the history of the area from the 12th century to the present day, and is a fascinating learning experience on one of Paris’ most interesting neighbourhoods.

For a totally unique museum experience, the Museé de l’Homme, housed in the Palais de Chaillot, in the Jardins de Trocadéro, is the place to go. The museum, a homage to human anthropology, is full of unusual displays about mankind’s ritual behaviour, such as head-shrinking and mummification, but also explores some of the more usual human activities. Some of the pieces date back as far as 3.5 million years BCE, and come from places as diverse as Asia, the Pacific and South America. The collection includes both prehistoric and modern exhibits, and interactive high-tech displays on different topics such as genetics.

The Musée Carnavalet, on Rue de Sévigné in the Marais district, is housed in two massive adjoining mansions, Carnavalet and Le Peletier. The museum has a diverse collection of artefacts, ranging from the traditional paintings and sculptures, to memorabilia of the great 18th century thinkers, Rousseau and Voltaire, and artefacts from the French Revolution. The rooms in the mansions are all set up as they used to be, with the beautiful antique furniture recreating the ambience of past eras. This collection is certainly not to be missed, and is truly extraordinary, offering an exciting glimpse back into the history of this fascinating country.
