  • Paris Shopping

  • Paris is known as the capital of the fashion world, and has a plethora of shopping opportunities, ranging from the designer stores, to unique fashion boutiques and flea market bargains. Many of the designer stores can be found on Avenue Montaigne, near the Champs Elysées. Whether you prefer the luxourious evening wear of Dior, or the classic Chanel tweed jackets, this is the area to head to for top of the range fashion. Other famous names that can be found on this street are, Prada, Joseph, Calvin Klein and Valentino. The Champs Elysées itself is a street on which many shops can be found, including luxury car showrooms, and conversely moderately priced shops where the ‘real Parisians’ shop. Although, one can also find the world famous Sephora beauty store, which is an extraordinary experience in sight and scent.

The Marais district is an area full of hip and trendy boutiques, such as that of Japanese designer, Issey Miyake, in Place des Vosges, which sells his limited edition range, and Costumiseé Par Liza on Rue Charlot, which sells unique and original clothing, with a costume-inspired slant. Paris also has two main department stores, Au Printemps, opened in 1864, and Galeries Lafayette, opened in 1894, both situated on Boulevard Haussmann in the Opéra district. They both stock high quality fashion and homeware, which range from those with designer price tags to more affordable options. Both buildings are testament to Parisian style, with their ornate fascias and dome-topped roofs.

For a more bohemian experience head to the Left Bank to peruse the many stalls and flea markets lining the river. One area of the Left Bank that is particularly good for grabbing a bargain is the Latin Quarter. For an original shopping experience head to Rue Mouffetard, the location of one of the oldest street markets in Paris. This winding, narrow street is lined with spectacular food stalls and speciality shops, where shoppers can be sure of finding a unique treasure. The Left Bank, known as an academic haunt due to the world-renowned Sorbonne University that is located there, also has a plethora of different bookshops. These shops sell every type of literary work imaginable, from specialist books and great literary works, to comic books and cookbooks.

Antique lovers will have a field day at the largest antiques market in the world, Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen, at Porte de Clignancourt. This market is open every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and hums with bustling activity. The market is really made up of thirteen individual markets, the oldest one being Marché Vernaison, which is the most quaint of them. Another one Marché Malik sells vintage clothing, whilst the other markets sell all manner of items ranging from jewellery to paintings and furniture.
