Vienna Restaurants
- Vienna has many fabulous restaurants, but one of the most exclusive of them has to be Korso bei der Oper, located in the upmarket Hotel Bristol on Kaerntner Ring. The sumptuous setting of mahogany furniture and crystal chandeliers is the epitome of opulence, the perfect place to enjoy the fabulous gourmet offerings. The restaurant serves the best in fine Viennese and international cuisine, prepared by one of Austria’s most celebrated chefs Reinhard Gerer. As well as an extensive wine list offering both Austrian and international wines and of course the prerequisite Schnapps, there are also cigars on offer, and all this is topped off with a fantastic view of the splendid Opera House opposite.
However the Steirereck, located on Steirereck im Stadtpark near Am Heumarkt, is reported to be the best restaurant in Vienna. The setting and service is second-to-none, and the food is even more excellent! The creations on offer are the height of innovative and creative design and take their inspiration from both local and international influences. House specials include sturgeon fillets in pepper sauce served with crispy olives, whilst the winelist is sourced from the 25 000 bottles that are stored in the restaurant’s cellar.
Another restaurant with a fabulous view is the Do & Co Stephanplatz which is a first-class bistro located in the Haas Haus overlooking the magnificent Stephansdom in Stephansplatz. This elegant restaurant is the epitome of chic with its white décor featuring sumptuous leather seats and a relaxing lounge, and presents a selection of the best dishes from around the world, including traditional Austrian cuisine, as well as sushi and Thai offerings. The intimate bistro is the perfect place for a relaxing meal, but many people come just for a coffee to take in the amazing views! Don’t miss the winter special of oysters or the magnificent outside dining in summer.
If pasta is more your thing then head to La Scala situated within the exclusive Hotel Hilton Vienna Plaza on Schottenring, named after the famous Italian landmark, La Scala Opera House in Milan. The restaurant offers Austrian nouvelle cuisine, but is highly influenced by the Mediterranean, and is said to have the best pasta dishes in the country! During the week three superb light business lunches are on offer, and on Tuesdays through Saturdays there is an added bonus of live piano music.
Drei Husaren, (Three Hussars) located on Weihburggasse is a living, breathing homage to traditional Viennese cooking in their most sumptuous form. The wide ranging menu includes both modern and traditional Viennese specialties, and the restaurant is particularly renowned for its delicious hors d’oeuvres. Delectable several-course set meals with wines included are a mainstay, but there are also many à la carte choices as well. The tables are divided between several exquisite salons which are complemented by the live piano music playing.
Kervansaray-Hummerbar located on Mahlerstrasse is an unusual venue in that this restaurant contains two eateries; Hummerbar on the first floor is one of the city’s most famous seafood restaurants and offers fantastic oysters, lobster and caviar, whilst Kervansaray on the ground floor provides Turkish-inspired meat and fish dishes, with one of the most exquisite meze buffets in Vienna.
For a fantastic dining experience in sumptuous surroundings, head to Weinzirl, situated in the renowned Konzerthaus located on Lothringerstrasse. The huge and elegant Art-Nouveau surroundings of the theatre extend into the restaurant which complements the fabulous cuisine. Both traditional and innovative creations are on offer, with Schmankerln, warm and cold delicacies, the restaurant signature dish, whilst the regular Sunday concert dinners are the ultimate treat. The wine list also offers fantastic choice, especially with the wide range of Austrian cuvées.
