  • Rome Museums

  • If you go to only one museum in Rome it has to be the Vatican Museums, which allow an insight into one of the most intriguing and secretive dynasties in the world. These museums hold ten different collections, including the world-renowned Sistine Chapel and papal apartments. Within these museums the Pinacoteca is a particular highlight. This museum was built especially to house the Papal art collection, in a location that was said to provide the best lighting for viewing the paintings and preserving them. The collection is spread amongst 18 rooms and includes work by masters such as Giotto and Perugino.

The Musei Capitolini in Piazza del Campidoglio is notable for holding one of the oldest collections in the world. The museum was initiated by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471, with his donation to the city of a number of bronze statues. Today it holds large collections of coins, sculptures and mosaics, and also many examples of works by Greek, Etruscan and Egyptian artists. Following the Unification of Italy in the 19th century, when Rome was made Italy’s capital, a large number of archaeological pieces were added to the collection, that were found when digging the new foundations for the city. The collection contains of some of Rome’s biggest treasures, including the museum’s most famous piece The Dying Gaul, which is purported to come from the first century.

The Etruscan National Museum of Villa Giulia, in Piazza Villa Giulia, was originally built as a home for Pope Julius III in the late 1500s, and many of the most prominent architects of the era were involved in its design. It was made into a museum in 1889, and today the museum houses the most representative collection of Etruscan pieces in Italy. Most of the exhibits are arranged according to their place of origin, and contain various sculptures, including a collection of terracotta pieces and ceramics, and many gold and bronze artefacts.

The impressive Palatine Museum in Via San Gregorio has been re-opened to the public after a thirteen-year closure. The museum covers the history of Rome from its foundation up until the Imperial Age. The museum is split up over two floors; on the first floor pieces from the Iron Age and Republican period are displayed, and on the second, inlaid pieces and frescos from the Domus Transitoria period.

Castel Sant'Angelo on Lungotevere Castello was known as the stronghold of Rome throughout many centuries, especially during sieges on the city. Today it is well renowned as a museum, and visitors are able to view its various interior rooms, including many with 16th century frescos, as well as the prison, and antique weaponry collection.

The Museo Nazionale Romano, founded in 1889, is a mammoth museum spread amongst five different sites, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Palazzo Altemps, Aula Ottagona, Crypta Balbi, and the Baths of Diocletian. The first is a former 19th century palace, and contains some amazing ancient mosaics, sculptures and frescos. Aula Ottagona, a remnant of part of the baths, has some phenomenal oversized bathhouse sculptures, whilst other sites contain many archaeological discoveries and ancient artefacts.
