Antwerp Shopping
- Antwerp’s most famous export is its fabulous diamonds, which have been a contributing factor in making the area very wealthy. One such shop selling these famous products is Diamondland, located on Appelmansstraat, the city’s biggest jewellery shop, which is also an active workshop. A 20-minute guided tour lets shoppers watch artisans cleave, saw, brute and polish loose stones, whilst also learning about international rules for grading diamonds. Prices at the store are considerably lower than at retail shops, and if you purchase a loose diamond you can even wait while it is being set. The "Antwerp cut" is said to maximize the glitter of the stone and is an incredibly popular purchase at this store.
The city is also renowned for the "Antwerp Six", a group of young fashion designers who trained at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts and went on to earn international reputations for their designs. One of these designers is Ann Demeulemeester, whose flagship store is located on Verlatstraat in a 19th-century former seaman's academy. This huge shop is the only place in the city where her entire men’s and women’s collections, as well as shoes and accessories are on display. Demeulemeester first came on the scene in 1985 and is famous for her stylish minimalist designs in shades of beige, charcoal and black.
The shop of Anna Heylen, located on Lombardenvest, is another fine designer store. Although not one of the "Antwerp Six," Heylen also studied fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the 1980s, and her designs are just as spectacular. She launched her first collection in 2000, and is renowned for her accented jewel-toned and lace-edged pieces. Heylen often designs her own fabrics and sometimes screen-prints her personal mantra, "Liberty is a never-ending love-story," on them. Once a week, Heylen actually works in the shop so you may get a chance to meet the designer in person. Another favourite is Coccodrillo, located on Schuttershofstraat in the Latin Quarter, is an exclusive shoe store stocking luxury footwear by Flemish and international designers. Big names such as Prada, Miu Miu and Jil Sander, can be found here as well as local designers Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten.
The Century Center, located on de Keyserlei, across from Centraal Station, was Antwerp's first indoor shopping mall. This multi-story complex contains a variety of small boutiques purveying menswear, womenswear, shoes, sportswear, and jewellery, as well as cafés and snackbars.
Another of the popular shopping centres is the Grand Bazar Shopping Centre, located on Groenplaats. One of the most famous stores here is the international brand FNAC, where nearly every form of media technology can be found. Books, including a good selection of English-language titles, CDs, DVDs, comic books, cameras, computers and stereo equipment are all for sale. The store also sells tickets for theatre and concert performances, and regularly holds concerts and book-signings in the store on Saturdays.
The biggest shopping centre in Antwerp is the Wijnegem Shopping Center, located on Turnhoutsebaan, on the outskirts of the city. More than 240 boutiques and department stores are spread over two floors, as well as fast food outlets and several sit-down cafés.
Kammenstraat, in the Latin Quarter, is one of the city's major shopping streets and the location of one of Antwerp’s most popular alternative stores, Fish & Chips. The store is highly unusual in that it features a bar, a cutting-edge hair stylist, and an in-store DJ playing house and techno, as well as its trendy retro clothing. A huge array of vintage clothing is available here dating from 1950 to 1970, including Atari t-shirts, Donna Reed housedresses and Mrs. Roper muumuus.
