  • The biggest fashion event in Madrid is the annual Semana Internacional de la Moda de Madrid (SIMM) (Madrid International Fashion Week); during this event the fashion capital welcomes the world’s movers and shakers every August at the Juan Carlos I Exhibition Centre. The event highlights the extensive fashion tradition there is in Madrid and this is demonstrated no better than on the city’s streets, where top fashion stores and boutiques abound.

The Salamanca district, especially the area made up of Calle de Velázquez, Calle de Serrano, and Calle de Goya forms Madrid’s central shopping area, which is full of Spain’s leading fashion designers. Calle de Serrano is the leading shopping street in the city, bisecting the heart of the Salamanca district, and is the place where you can find many of the top Spanish designers, as well as famous international heavyweights Armani, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Cartier. Adolfo Domínguez, who has two stores on this street, is one of the foremost designers in the country, and specialises in stylish understated clothes, whereas Purificación García, who similarly has two shops on Calle de Serrano, focuses on sleek designs and a wide range of accessories. Roberto Verino, another of the country’s leading designers, who has a store on this street and on Calle de Claudio Coello, sells ladies’ and men’s designs and accessories and caters for stylish, confident consumers.

The street also contains one of Madrid’s main shopping malls, Galería ABC Serrano, which contains many fantastic boutiques, as well as an outlet of the international Spanish brand, Zara. This is also the location of Spain’s most famous department store, El Corte Inglés which has two branches in this street, as well as stores specialising in books and gifts. There is also a branch of El Corte Inglés in the nearby Calle de Goya, which also features a beauty parlour, restaurant and supermarket at this store. On the same street is El Jardin de Serrano, one of the most upmarket shopping centres in the city. As well as stocking all the best names in haute couture, it also sells exclusive accessories and jewellery. There is also a branch of the Mallorca delicatessen Pasteleia here, which sells mouth-watering cheeses, hams, pastries, rolls, cakes and ice creams. There are also other individual branches of this store on Calle de Serrano, and Calle de Velázquez.

Another of Spain’s primary designers is Agatha Ruíz de la Prada, situated here on Calle Marqués de Riscal; one of the most innovative creators on the country’s fashion scene. Her bold use of colour and design is particularly focused upon, and draws a lot of followers. She also has fabulous lines in accessories, stationery and homeware. Loewe is another of Spain’s well-known names, with several locations on Calle de Serrano, and the first store of this brand opened in the city in 1846. The store is especially sought out for its accessories, in particular those of the leather variety. Another of the country’s top designers is Angel Schlesser located on Calle de Claudio Coello, whose defining style includes discreet colours and intricate detailing on his men’s and women’s clothing. Elena Benarroch, located in another of Salamanca’s top streets, Calle Lagasca, is a gigantic store specialising in opulent furs, as well as selling Jil Sander designs and hats by wonder-milliner Philip Treacy. The main artery of Milan, Gran Vía, also has many top name stores, as do Calle del Almirante and Calle de Conde de Xiquena in the neighbouring district. The Centro de Anticuarios Lagasca is a unique shopping centre which groups all the city’s best antiques dealers under one roof. Antique-lovers will have a field day at this centre located on Calle de Lagasca, where the collection of antiquarian items is absolutely sublime.

El Rastro, located in one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, Lavapiés, is Madrid’s most famous market, and has been around for over 100 years. The colourful and energetic atmosphere here is almost legendary around Spain, and people travel from all over to experience its flea market. El Rastro also features many stalls selling new clothing, furniture, hats, art equipment, electrical items and sportswear. The market is held every Sunday, but some stalls are open on a Saturday too.
