- Despite Cannes’ reputation as a haven of relaxation, there are opportunities to indulge in some more invigorating pastimes, should the mood take you. As you would expect in a luxury resort there are many gymnasiums available both within the hotels, and in the town itself. However, there are also more unusual sporting activities available, which are only possible in a waterside resort such as this. There are many boating opportunities available in Cannes, as well as many pleasure craft dotting the harbour. Visitors are able to hire a boat for the day, or be taken on a cruise around the harbour by an expert skipper. Many other watersports, such as paragliding, waterskiing and windsurfing are also available at the plethora of beaches alongside the Boulevard de la Croisette and the harbour. Besides watersports, there are also many other sporting activities on offer in Cannes, some more conventional than others.
A national favourite pastime you must experience is the fabulous sport of boules. Check out one of the many boulodromes scattered around the town, such as Boulodrome Henri Bergia in Place Henri Bergia, which is covered with sand and floodlit, or the slightly bigger Boulodrome Halle des sports on Avenue Chevalier.
There are also many opportunities to partake of a game of tennis in the large amount of sports halls spread throughout the city; however there is one dedicated complex of tennis courts in Cannes, the Tennis municipal la Bastide Rouge, which is located on Avenue Francis Tonner. This sports hall contains 18 hard surface courts, of which nine are floodlit, five clay courts, two training walls and a mini-tennis court for young children. Visitors are able to rent the courts by the hour, and to receive training from expert coaches. The complex also contains a clubhouse, fully-equipped with showers and locker rooms.
For a more unusual experience try the Plongee Club de Cannes located on rue Clemenceau, for a scuba-diving spectacular! From April to November, company owners Sylvie and Patrick organise tours of the spectacular underwater cliffs around the Îles des Lerins, La Baie de Cannes and the Golfe de Juan. Each tour consists of groups of four people, under expert instruction, and lasts approximately three hours, with all prices inclusive of diving gear hire. Cannes has many fitness centres on offer; however a particularly good one is the Cent pour Cent Forme located on rue des Frères Pradignac. This fitness centre has all you would need for the ultimate workout, including a well-equipped gym with a variety of bodybuilding equipment, and a variety of aerobic lessons. The fitness centre also contains private showers and a locker room.
There are also many golf courses available in Cannes, with the nearest less than a mile from the centre of town. A particular favourite is the famous Golf Old Course de Cannes-Mandelieu, located just outside Cannes. One of the most prestigious courses in the Cannes area is the Golf de Cannes-Mougins located nearby Cannes in Mougins on Avenue du Golf. Only the best of the best can play here with a handicap of 24 for men and 28 for women required for entry. However, the reward is a beautifully laid-out but testing golf course.
