Antwerp Sports
- Sports are very popular in Belgium’s second city, and Antwerp is often the location for many of the country’s top sporting events. The Antwerp Stadion Football, Bosuilstadion located on Oude Bosuilbaan, is the home of the city’s premier football team, Royal Antwerp FC. The stadium was built in 1923 and has a capacity of 16,649, and is the site of many football competitions as well as other major sporting events.
One of the most popular sports in the city is the annual ice skating which takes place every December in the main city square, grote markt, around the statue of Brabo. This rink is open to all and is free, offering spectacular views of the town hall and the cathedral. The rink gets especially busy once night falls due to the romantic atmosphere that is created. Ice skates can be hired at the rink for a small price.
Cycling is also a popular sport in Antwerp, and it’s also a great way to see the city’s Left Bank and neighbouring areas on the bicycle trail called "St-Annekesroute" that goes through them. Starting at the Left Bank entrance to the pedestrian tunnel the trail takes you past sights such as Castle Cortewalle in the town of Beveren and some of the ancient forts of the city. You can rent a bike at many locations around the city, and there are also many great places to ride all over the city centre.
There are also several indoor climbing walls in the greater Antwerp area, such as Wallstreet, Klim Indoor, and Klimzaal Blok (bouldering). Further from the city in Breendonk (approx. 20 minutes by car), is one of Belgium's largest indoor climbing halls, Klimax. This can be reached by the A12 highway to Brussels. At all the climbing walls climbing shoes and gear can be rented.
There are also many gymnasiums available in Antwerp, such as the internationally renowned Fitness First, located on Oudaan, and L.A. Fitness, located within Gym Generaal on Lemanstraat. All offer a wide range of fitness facilities, as well as saunas, steam rooms and some offer swimming pools and jacuzzis.
One of the most popular summer pastimes in the city is the open air swimming available at Boekenbergzwembad in the Boekenbergpark Deurne near the Deurne airport, East of Antwerp. This kidney-shaped pool has a rich history, and its location in a picturesque park makes it a very popular spot for young people.
Basketball also has a large following, with local team Sanex Antwerp Giants, a very popular feature on the local scene. The team won the Belgian Cup in 2007, and continue to be highly successful in many championships. The team play all home games in the Lotto Arena, located within the Antwerps Sportpaleis on Schijnpoortweg.
