  • Berlin Sports

  • Germany has a long sporting tradition, and this is nowhere more evident than in the nation’s capital. The Olympiastadion located on Olympischer Platz is the city’s most prestigious sporting venue, the site of many prominent events, in particular the DFB-Pokalfinale, the German Cup Final, where 76 000 supporters watch their favourite teams battle it out to be crowned top of the league. The stadium was built for the infamous 1936 Olympics and its massive size is typical of the imposing Nazi style architecture. Similarly, two gigantic statues at the entrance greet supporters on their arrival. The 80 000 seat stadium is the home of Berlin’s beloved football team, Hertha BSC. Within the stadium is an exhibition charting the history of the building and those that have competed in it.

The Berlin-Marathon is the most energetic marathon held in the world, inspired by the German spirit of perseverance. Thousands of runners from around Europe descend on the city every September for this marathon, which begins on the Straße des 17. Juni. One of the most popular sporting events in the capital is the Berlin Parade which takes place every June on the Straße des 17. Juni. Here in-line skaters from around the world meet to ‘blade’ the streets of Berlin.

The most highly-respected sporting event in the city is the Sechstagerennen (Six Day Race) which takes place every January in the impressive, contemporary, silver Velodrom on Paul-Heyse-Strasse. During this prestigious week-long contest cyclists battle it out to win this fiercely contested competition. The German Open is one of the most prestigious ladies’ tennis events in Europe, which is usually sold out months in advance. Should you be so lucky as to get a ticket, it takes place at the Tennisclub Rot-Weiß every May.

The Berliner Neujahrslauf (New Year’s Day Run) is not for the faint-hearted. Whilst most other people around the world are nursing a hangover, these hardy Berliners are bracing themselves for a race in the freezing cold German winter temperatures. If you’re mad enough to join them, or just want to goggle in amazement, head to the famous Brandenburger Tor (Gate) for the beginning of this race.

The Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) is the country’s biggest athletics festival, and takes place every September at the Olympiastadion, where hundreds of athletes from many different disciplines battle it out to be crowned the top of their field. The Deutsches Traberderby is another popular event, which is the derby for professional trotter racers. This horse-drawn event where horses and drivers compete for the ‘Blue Ribbon’, takes place at the Trabrennbahn Mariendorf on Mariendorfer Damm in the first week of every August. Another horse-themed sporting occasion is the Internationales Reitturnier, the German show-jumpers event of the year, also taking place in the Trabrennbahn Mariendorf, but this time in November. The Berliner Motorrad Tage is a decidedly nosier event, where bikers from around the world meet on the city’s famous Kufürstendamm at the end of every March.

The Stadtbad Neukölln located on Ganghoferstraße is the most beautiful swimming baths in the whole of the city, and perhaps all of Europe. This pool dates from the 19th century and still retains many of its original Art-Nouveau features. Swimming here is an other-worldly experience, not so much a sport but a luxurious occasion. The city also boasts fabulous badminton and squash courts such as Sport Oase, located on Stromstraße, which contains four separate halls with 23 courts spread between them on various levels. The centre which is based in a former brewery, also suitably contains a bar. There are many fitness clubs available in Berlin but none quite tops the Aspria, located on Karlsruher Strasse, which is renowned as the city’s premier health club. Here you will find all the latest sports equipment and an Olympic-sized pool, as well as a sauna, beauty salon which offers massages, a rooftop relaxation area and a healthfood restaurant. A visit here is a sublime experience in repose and pampering!
