  • Austria has a firm sporting heritage, and boasts a number of football teams, including SK Rapid Wien and FK Austria Wien who are the two major teams in Vienna. FK Austria Wien were the champions of the 2005/06 Austrian Bundesliga, and are often referred to in English as Austria Vienna. Their home ground is the Horr Stadion which can seat 11,608 supporters and was built in 1925. Their arch nemesis is Sportklub Rapid Wien (SK Rapid Wien) who were established in 1899, and have their home ground at the Gerhard-Hanappi Stadium in Hütteldorf part of the Penzing district. The stadium was officially opened in 1977 as Weststadion but in 1980 it was renamed in honour of its architect, legendary Austrian football player Gerhard Hanappi. The stadium is colloquially known as "Sankt Hanappi" (Saint Hanappi), which relates to the fans' slogan ‘Rapid ist uns're Religion’ (‘Rapid is our Religion’). It can seat up to 18 500 supporters making it the second largest football stadium in Vienna, after the Ernst Happel Stadion. The team is also called the "Green-Whites" after their team colours and in English the team are known as Rapid Vienna.

The Ernst Happel Stadium located on Meiereistraße is the largest football stadium in Austria. The stadium is oficially the home of the national team, but is only used in club football for international games. The city’s top teams FK Austria Wien and SK Rapid Wien use this stadium for their UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup matches as their home stadiums are too small to host international-scale matches. The stadium was originally called the Praterstadion (Prater Stadium) after it was built between 1929 and 1931 for the second Workers' Olympiad. However in 1992 the stadium was renamed in honour of the famous player and coach, Ernst Happel. Although its current capacity is only 49,844, the stadium is rated as one of UEFA's Five Star Stadiums which is an accolade usually only given to stadiums with a capacity of more than 50,000, which allowed the stadium to host the UEFA Champions League final. The seating capacity is being expanded to 53,008 for the 2008 European Football Championship, whose final match will be held in this stadium. The largest crowd accommodated in the stadium, before a capacity reduction in 1965, was 92,708 for a match against Spain.

First Vienna FC is another football club based in the city of Vienna, and was established on 22nd August 1894, making it the country's oldest team. Suprisingly it is colloquially known by the Austrians by the English name Vienna. However despite the team’s long-running history, today it is floundering in the Third Devision. The club's home ground is the Hohe Warte Stadium built in 1921 which has a capacity of 5000.

Tennis is another great love of the Viennese especially due to the heritage of Austrian tennis pros Thomas Muster and Barbara Schett. There are many tennis courts scattered throughout the city for visitors to enjoy. There are also three large golf courses in the city, and they have a unique arangement that if you have your membership card from your home club you can book a game. Mountain biking is another popular sport in the city and the surrounding Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg hills are frequent haunts of the biking enthusiasts. Another extreme sport, rock climbing is very popular with Vienna’s citizens, and there is an massive indoor climbing wall set up by the Austrian Alpine Society in the huge Esterhazypark anti-aircraft tower.

In-line skating is a highly popular sport in Vienna especially in the Prater park located on U-Bahn Praterstern, where there are skating parks, and long avenues perfect for skating on as well as many hire shops. Jogging is another die-hard pastime of the Viennese and it is safe even to go jogging in the city’s streets even at night. Races are often held between fellow enthusiasts who battle it out to be crowned champion of the joggers! Cycling is also very popular and there are many cycling paths laid out throughout Vienna which cover more than 500 miles! A huge recreational island called Donauinsel on the New Danube, located on U-Bahn Donauinsel, has many cycle paths and is one of the best places to go to engage in this sport. There are also many opportunities to go swimming in the city, with many outdoor and indoor pools, and the Danube tributaries are also very popular places to go for a paddle.
