Monaco Sports
- Without a doubt the most famous sport in Monaco has to be the annual Grand Prix, when Formula 1 racing cars zoom around Monaco’s warren of streets, in the only racing event of the year that actually takes place throughout a city’s streets. Since the race began in 1929 it has been one of the most popular sporting events worldwide, with people from far and wide flocking to Monaco for it. The city’s streets come to a standstill and are completely closed off except for the cars racing through them. It is extremely hard to get tickets, people book them up to a year in advance, but you may be able to see some of the action from your hotel balcony.
Despite the small size of the state, Monaco does actually have its own football team, AS Monaco. The team was founded in 1924, and went professional after WWII. Although Monaco is regarded a state in its own right, it does play in the French League, where they have won seven league titles and five French Cups, making AS Monaco one of France's most successful teams. The small city’s club’s proudest moment to date was reaching the 1992 UEFA Cup Winners' final.
Monaco regularly hosts matches between its home team and other premiership football teams in its state of the art Louis II Stadium, located on Avenue des Castelans, Fontvieille. This vast sports complex was built in 1985 on the Fontvieille esplanade, and is the setting for many high-level international sporting competitions. It is widely-thought to be one of the world’s best sports complexes. Tours of the stadium are available and usually last about an hour.
For sports of a more marine variety head to La Condamine near the harbour, which is a great place to take in the plethora of watersports available in Monaco. There is a dedicated watersports pool at the quays which was added by the current Prince of Monaco, where visitors are able to take part in many different water activities including sailing and windsurfing. Jet skiing, waterskiing, parasailing, windsurfing are also available at the Monte Carlo Beach Club. Sailing lessons are also available at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Club located on Quai Antoine Ier.
There are two fantastic swimming pools open to the public in Monaco, aside from the many private hotel pools in the city, and these are the Rainier III Swimming Pool, and the Prince Albert Swimming Pool in the Louis II Stadium in Fontvieille.
There is a fantastic golf club located in Monaco, at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, which is located on the slopes of Mont Agel, offering spectacular vistas over the city, the Cote d'Azur and the Italian Riviera. The club provides a top-quality 18-hole, par 71 course, open everyday. The Monte-Carlo Country Club also has great provision for Tennis playing, and is reported to be one of the best tennis clubs in the world. The Club is the site for all International Open Championships and has 22 clay courts for patrons to use. The Club also has a swimming pool (May-October), Sauna, Jacuzzi and Fitness Centre.
For squash-lovers the principality has more than adequate provision with the Monte Carlo Squash Racket Club, located at Stade Louis II, which has four courts open all year round, and further courts are available at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
