Cannes Theatres
- There are a number of wonderful theatres in Cannes, as you would expect with the city’s rich arts and film heritage. The most prestigious of these venues is the spectacular Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière located within the Palais des Festivals on Boulevard de la Croisette. The theatre has benefited from a large-scale revamp of the whole Palais complex, and is now the largest theatre in Cannes. The theatre is absolutely awe-inspiring, with its huge auditorium able to hold up to 2300 people! The luxurious surroundings are set off by the theatre’s ultra-modern edge, but walking up the traditional red carpet outside the venue has to be the highlight of a visit! The grandeur of this theatre means that it is the number one venue for all the top events that take place in Cannes, such as the Film Festival's premier ceremony, the Palme d'Or, and the awards ceremony at the MIDEM International Music Festival.
The magnificent Alexandre III Théâtre de Cannes is situated on Boulevard Alexandre III. This theatre can seat up to 180 people and used to be an old cinema which is still evident in the building’s décor. Alexandre III hosts many different types of performances, including special film screenings every Monday, and always plays an integral part in the prestigious International Film Festival.
Le Raimu theatre is located in the Centre de Ranguin on Avenue de la Borde in the La Bocca area. The theatre is a multi-use venue and offers everything from children's theatre and puppet shows, to some of the best films from the Cannes International Film Festival. The live shows always bring the house down, and other highlights include regular screenings of art house films with subsequent discussion sessions.
There are many different theatres located within the Palais des Festivals which is situated on Boulevard La Croisette and each are used during the Cannes Festival for different purposes. One of these venues is the Theâtre Debussy which is used for many prominent events. This impressive, contemporary theatre can seat up to 600 people, and is used prolifically during the International Film Festival to screen some of the world’s best offerings of art house films. The theatre is also used for concerts during the MIDEM and for ballet performances during the International Dance Festival. When it is not in use for festival events, it stages many performances throughout the year, which include plays, concerts and ballets.
The Buñuel Theatre is another venue situated within the Palais des Festivals. It is used during the International Film Festival for screening the films in the category of “Cannes Classics” and those of the Cinéfondation Selection. The theatre is also used throughout the festival for the Cinema, Music and Actor MasterClasses.
