Amsterdam Theatres
- Amsterdam has many performing arts venues due to its inhabitants love of a good time, and there are many different types of theatre to choose from, ranging from traditional to modern. One of the world’s greatest concert halls, the Concertgebouw, can be found in this city, on Concertgebouwplein, hosting some of the most prestigious orchestras and conductors of all time. This venue has such a phenomenal reputation that one of the all-time greatest actresses, Audrey Hepburn, had a season ticket for the theatre when she lived in the city. The building itself dates from 1888, and was designed with a breathtaking Neo-Classical façade, with marble stonemasonry, colonnades and reliefs. Spectacular classical music concerts are put on here, showcasing some of the world’s most talented performers.
The Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, on Piet Heinkade is Amsterdam’s newest concert hall, bringing the city’s musical venues into the 21st century. The huge auditorium can hold over 700 people, whilst the smaller hall can seat has a capacity for 125. The concert hall puts on mainly contemporary performances, in line with the modern surroundings. The building is situated over the IJsselmeer, and has spectacular foyer decks offering a wonderful waterfront view.
A more traditional venue is the Koninklijk Theater Carré, set in a beautiful location by the banks of the Amstel. It was built in 1894 to house Oscar Carré’s circus, and remnants of its original function can still be seen in the clowns’ and dancers’ heads that decorate the front of the building. Designed in a Neo-Renaissance style, with fabulous ironwork, the building is now one of the premier performance venues in the city. Besides still hosting the occasional clown, the theatre now also shows magnificent dance shows, splendid musicals, and pop concerts.
Amsterdam’s municipal theatre is located on Leidseplein, housed in the wonderful Stadsschouwburg. The building, in beautiful Neo-Renaissance style, is actually the third to stand on this site, with the two previous ones having burnt down. The theatre plays host to many local drama companies, as well as national and international talent.
Another renowned music venue is the Het Muziektheater, also by the Amstel. This venue is often the haunt of the Dutch Royal family, who like to take in one of the spectacular shows put on here. Besides being the home to the Netherlands Opera and Netherlands Ballet companies, modern performances are also put on in this modern, warm theatre. However, be warned, the theatre is very popular, an tickets often sell out months before, so visitors are advised to pre-book their tickets before they arrive in the city.
If all these cultural venues aren’t quite up your street, then head on down to Boom Chicago for something completely different. This American comedy group, housed in the Leidseplein Theater on the Leidseplein, offers some light relief from the hustle and bustle of the city. The group satirizes anything from contemporary events, to the peculiar habits of their Dutch neighbours, and is sure to provide an evening of huge comical entertainment. Top this off with the traditional Dutch beer, served in huge tankards and you’re in for a spectacular evening!
