- The Philharmonie (Philharmonic Concert Hall) located on Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße in the magnificent Kulturforum in East Berlin, is a breathtaking design evoking images of a circus tent. The magnificent pentagonal building was completed in 1963, and pioneered a new concept that would be taken up by concert halls around the world: a central podium surrounded by viewing galleries. The fabulous tent-like building is renowned for its fantastic acoustics and as one of the greatest concert halls in the world. It is covered with golden aluminium and edged in silver which was added in 1981, and dominates the surrounding areas. The concert hall is the home of one of the most famous orchestras in Europe, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and is one of the greatest post-war architectural designs on the continent as well. In 1987 a new addition to the Philharmonie was made in the form of the Kammermusiksaal (Chamber Music Hall), whose design was made to blend in with the existing tent-like structure, and consisted of a multi-dimensional building.
The city has three fantastic opera houses, with the most prominent of these being the Staatsoper (Opera House) Unter den Linden. This opera house is located on the famous street it derives its name from and the notorious Bebelplatz, is a spectacular theatre which hosts some of the most outstanding performances in the country. There are magnificent bas-reliefs of musicians and instruments on its façade. The theatre stages a variety of famous operas, such as Aida and Don Carlo, by Verdi, Bizet’s Carmen, Fidelio by Beethoven, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner. As well as putting on the numerous operas the theatre is famous for, it also hosts a large number of theatrical and dramatic performances, as well as concerts, ballets and vocal recitals. The Staatsopher is also home to the Berlin Orchestra, who accompany many of the theatre’s operas, as well as being a distinguished concert orchestra in their own right. The other city opera houses are the Deutsche Oper Berlin on Bismarckstraße, and the Komische Oper on Behrenstraße, which along with the Staatsoper all have resident ballet companies and perform magnificent operas.
The Konzerthaus, located on Gendarmenmarkt is one of the top concert halls in the country, home to the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and staging some of the most esteemed performances in Europe. This phenomenal theatre, completed in 1821, was known until recently as the Schauspielhaus, and features spectacular portico columns. The building was rebuilt following WW2, and has continued to be a beacon of magnificence ever since. The sculptures which decorate the building are derived from musical and dramatic themes, whilst the enormous Ionic portico which stands at the top of an imposing set of stairs, is topped by a sculpture of Apollo riding a chariot led by griffins. In front of the building are many statues, including those representing Poetry, Drama, Philosophy and History.
Berlin is known as one of the greatest theatrical centres in Europe, and its offering of theatres does not disappoint. The main dramatic theatres all offer a fantastic selection of plays are the Berliner Ensemble, on Bertold-Brecht-Platz, one of the city’s most famous theatres; the Deutsches Theater on Schumannstraße; the Hebbel Am Ufer Theater divided between three locations Stresemannstraße, Hallesches Ufer, and Tempelhofer Ufer; and the Volksbühne in Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, which stages work by young playwrights.
Berlin also boasts one of the famous IMAX cinemas, which is located on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, and has a huge 27m high screen showing amazing 3D films. Next door in Potsdamer Platz is the biggest multiplex cinema in the city, the CinemaxX, which has nineteen screens and shows all the latest releases, some in their original language.
