Brussels Theatres
- La Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, located in the Place de la Monnaie, was originally buuilt in 1817 on the site of the old mint, hence its name, but was destroyed by fire in 1855. The ornate Neo-Classical columned portico remained but little else. After the fire the architect of the Palais de Justice redesigned the theatre into the magnificent building we see today. The theatre is also famous as the originator of the 1830 September Uprising which instigated the founding of the Belgian State. During a stirring performance of the patriotic song Amour Sacré de la Patrie (Sacred Love of the Homeland) in the play La Mutte de Portici (The Mute Girl), audience members suddenly jumped to their feet and rushed out into the street and started a rampage, spurred on by their hatred of Dutch rule and inspired by the French Revolution that was currently taking place. The theatre still has a prominent position in the country, as the centre of Belgian performing arts, and is one of Europe’s foremost venues for opera, with many performances sold out months in advance. The auditorium is decked out in sumptuous Louis XIV-style, which includes a magnificent central dome featuring an allegory to Belgian arts, whilst the ornate stage decorations were added in the 1980s.
The Théâtre Marionettes de Toone, located on Impasse Schuddeveld, off the Petite Rue des Bouchers, is an unusual theatre located on the top floor of a pub. This theatre originated from the days when theatres were banned by the Spanish rulers, causing a trend for puppet shows. In 1830 Antoine Toone opened this theatre which has stayed in the family ever since, and is currently owned by Toone VII. The marionettes act out the classic plays in Bruxellois dialect, and occasionally in French, English, German or Dutch. This is a unique entertainment experience not to be missed!
The Théâtre Flamand located on Rue de Laeken in the former port area on the banks of the River Senne. The theatre was established in 1882 on the site of a former waterfront warehouse and retains the original 1780 façade behind the newer frontage of the theatre. The theatre also has a sumptuous interior enhanced by a 19th century sweeping staircase, all of which has recently been refurbished.
The Palais des Beaux-Arts, located on Rue Ravenstein, is a unique cultural centre which houses concert halls, a theatre, a cinema and exhibition areas, showcasing all manner of talents in music, cinema, theatre and art. The centre was established by the entrepreneur Henri La Boeuf in 1922, and was the first of its kind in Europe. The project was a mammoth undertaking, and took seven years to complete, due to the location of the building on a slope, however it was definitely worth it in the end. The Palais now occupies a central position in Brussels’ artistic life, and has done for the past 70 years. The Palais des Beaux-Arts also houses the city’s largest auditorium for classical music, where the resident Belgian National Orchestra performs.
The spectacular Art-Deco Kaaitheater, located on Square Sainteclette, is renowned as the location of cutting-edge dance productions, as is the Halles de Schaerbeek, located on Rue Royale Sainte-Marie. The Kaaitheater also puts on concerts, performance art and drama shows. Résidence Palace, located within the Quartier Européen of the EU Parliament, houses amongst other things, a theatre which is open to the public.
