Nice Theatres
- The huge Opera House, Opéra de Nice, located off the Quai des Etats-Unis, was built in 1855, with spectacular opulent glamour. The opulent gold interior, with its three tiers of archways and enormous chandelier, is truly spectacular, and viewing a show here is indeed an added treat due to the sumptuous surroundings. Every year this magnificent venue puts on seven different magnificent operas and fifteen concerts, all of the highest standard.
The Theâtre de Nice on Avenue de Saint-Sebastien, off (Esplanade des Victoires), was built in 1989 and at the time attracted both criticism and support from locals. Today it is Nice’s main theatre, and performances in the huge auditorium designed by Pierre Brasseur, which can seat up 900 people, or the smaller Michel Simon auditorium, which can seat 300, attract mass support. The shows put on vary in theme, and range from classic plays to modern and little-known scripts. Around 20 different plays grace these stages annually, along with the occasional dance and musical events.
For an evening of entertainment you certainly won’t forget head to the Spectacle au Casino Ruhl located on Promenade des Anglais. The dinner cabaret at Le Ruhl Casino Barrière de Nice is an unmissable facet of any visit to this city, and one you will thoroughly enjoy. Whilst indulging in a fabulous meal, patrons can also take in the spectacular Spectacle! An added bonus of this venue is the casino next door, which will be certain to provide added fun to the evening’s entertainment. The cabaret is held on Friday and Saturday nights, but as the show is so popular it is highly advisable to book at least a week in advance.
The Theâtre de la Traverse situated on Rue François-Guisol in the Port area, is an up and coming, creative theatre, with an original outlook. This means that there is no actual set programme of performances published, plays just continue at this venue for as long as people keep coming to see them! There are approximately four different plays put on here each year, all varying enormously from each other. Themes range from plays based around Provence and theatrical adaptations of Jacques Prevert's poetry, to street theatre and beyond.
The Theâtre de la Cite on Rue Paganini is tucked away on an unobtrusive street near to Thiers train station. The theatre is under the direction of Meyer Cohen, and presents performances from every different genre imaginable. The bursting schedule includes first-time productions, classic plays, and cabaret style shows, comedy performances, such as the comedian Noëlle Perna, as well as many concerts, dance and puppet shows.
The Theâtre Francis Gag, located on Rue St-Joseph, is an ancient gem hidden among the newer buildings that have sprung up in the Old Town. Nevertheless, this is one of Nice's major theatres, named after Francis Gag, a much-loved Niçois poet and humanitarian. The huge auditorium which can seat up to 900 people, and which features a gigantic stage, holds over 150 performances every year. A highlight of the theatre’s calendar is the fine arts schools gala which is held at this at the end of every year in an epic 48 hour spectacle
