Vienna Theatres
- The magnificent Neo-Renaissance style stone Staatsoper (State Opera House), located on Opernring, is one of the highlights of this beautiful city, and a favourite with music lovers around the world. In the five ornate arches on the façade are bronze statues, each individually an allegory to, heroism, drama, fantasy, comedy and love. There are also two spectacular fountains topped with statues on either side of the exterior of the building. The grand entrance hall, with its awe-inspiring marble staircase resplendent with frescoes, mirrors and chandeliers which leads to the auditorium, is the perfect introduction to an evening of fine entertainment. The theatre first opened in 1869 with a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and nowadays the highlight of the entertainment calendar in the city is the Vienna Opera Ball held here every year on the last Thursday of the carnival season. Ballet and opera are both performed here, but the most splendid room in the theatre has to be the spectacular Tea Salon, with a magnificent fireplace surrounded by pillars and mirrors.
The Burgtheater located on Dr.-Karl-Lueger Ring, is a huge, imposing building with a magnificent Renaissance stone façade decorated with statues, and an ornate grand staircase in its entrance hall, surrounding by lamps, frescoes by Ernst and Gustav Klimt and gilt decorations. The building, which was built to serve as the Royal theatre, took fourteen years to build, but the result was a truly sumptuous venue. The Burgtheater is one of the foremost theatres in the German-speaking community, and the choice of current director is always a hotly debated subject. The Burg’s as it is called colloquially, traditional and contemporary plays also always attract mass critical review, maintaining the importance it received as one of the first theatres to be built in this area of the world.
The Volkstheater (People’s Theatre) located on Neustiftgasse, was created as a partner to the Burgtheater but was intended to provide a greater number of contemporary plays and more accessible traditional plays to a lager audience for smaller prices. The theatre was built in Historicist design with approximately a thousand seats, making this theatre one of the biggest German-language theatres in the world.
Vienna’s English theatre, located on Josefsgasse, was originally created as a summer theatre for tourists to the city, but has since gained in popularity and now stays open all year round. Founded in 1963, it is the oldest English-language theatre in Continental Europe, and has in its time hosted superstars such as Anthony Quinn and Judi Dench.
The Schauspielhaus located on Porzellangasse has a highly varied programme that includes everything from literary readings to light opera and contemporary drama. Since it opened in 1978 the theatre has hosted many Austrian and world premieres of shows, particularly those of Austrian playwright George Tabori. The small theatre provides an intimate feel created by the audience being very close to the actors.
The Theater in der Josefstadt located on Josefstädter Strasse, dates from 1788, but was rebuilt in 1822 and reopened with the performance of a piece by Beethoven specially composed for the occasion. The theatre maintains its popularity today and specialises in performances of plays by Austrian writers.
The Konzerthaus located on Lothringerstrasse, opened in 1913 by Franz Joseph I, and is one of the premier music venues in Vienna the Art-Nouveau style building contains seven halls, 3100 seats and a wide ranging programme made up of contemporary and classical music and jazz.
The striking white, circular Volksoper (People’s Opera) building, located on Währinger Strasse opened in 1898 using funds from industrialists to celebrate Franz Joseph’s Golden Jubilee. The theatre remains today as it was then, and performs a variety of light operas, operettas and dance productions.
