  • Munich Theatres

  • Munich contains a huge number of fine theatres, such as the stunning Art-Nouveau Münchner Kammerspiele im Schauspielhaus (Playhouse - Munich Chamber Theatre) located on Maximilianstraße. This theatre was built in 1900 and features spectacular Art-Nouveau design features such as bright red walls with ornamental outlines, a green ceiling with stucco beams and spotlights in the shape of flower buds. The theatre was renowned for putting on controversial works and its avant-garde traditions continue today. Another of Munich’s great theatres, and the world’s most splendid Rocco theatre, is the Cuvilliés-Theater (Altes Residenztheater), located within the spectacular Rezidenz on Residenzstraße, and named after its architect François de Cuvilliés. This theatre was formerly the court theatre, and features spectacular gold and red wood carvings, as well as dazzling gilded balconies. Here the Bavarian Drama Company puts on elaborate, modern interpretations of old and new plays.

The Deutsches Theater located on Schwanthalerstraße, is a key venue for the city’s operas, operettas, ballets and musicals, and attracts some of the most famous names on the international stage. The theatre also puts on circuses, variety shows and magicians, and is also the central facet of Munich's annual carnival. The theatre is also a regular venue for balls and other society events. One of the greatest theatres in Munich is the magnificent Staatstheater (National Theatre), located on Max-Joseph-Platz, which is also known as the Staatsoper (National Opera), and features a magnificent pseudo-Greek façade with Corinthian columns supporting a white, stone portico. The theatre is modelled on a Greek temple, and features a massive, circular auditorium done out in purple, gold, ivory and blue, five tiered galleries and a royal box. The theatre became famous as the location for the premiers of Wagner’s operas such as Tristan und Isolde and Rheingold, and now the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in the world plays here, whilst the Munich Opera Festival held at the theatre each year attracts visitors from around the world.

The Prinzregententheater, located on Prinzregentenstraße reopened in 1997, and since then has continued to delight audiences from across Munich. This theatre is the grandest of all the city’s opera houses and puts on performances of ballets, orchestras, operas and operettas from all over the world. The Classical building was completed in 1901, and features a uniquely-designed auditorium shaped like an amphitheatre with no seat categories, according to the democratic ideals of Wagnerian opera. The theatre also houses the Bavarian Theatre Academy, whose students use both of the theatre’s stages for public performances.

The Iberl-Bühne located on Wilhelm-Leibl-Straße has been Munich's top venue for Bavarian folk theatre since 1966. The one-hundred-seater theatre hosts performances here every evening from 8pm, most of which are written by the owner Georg Maier himself. The reputation of these shows, such as Grattleroper, are known for miles around, and attract crowds from all over who come to sample some original German folk drama.

The Marionettentheater located on Blumenstraße was Munich's first puppet theatre, founded in 1858 by Josef Leonhard Schmid and the Count of Pocci. In 1900 architect Theodore Fischer was commissioned to build a new theatre at the location, which resulted in the first ever purpose-built puppet theatre. The theatre is as popular and striking in the modern era as it was a hundred years ago, and continues attract both the young and old, who come to laugh at Kasperl (the German equivalent of Punch and Judy) and be enthralled by fairy tales enacted before them. The Volkstheater located on Brienner Straße, is a theatre that puts on classical, contemporary dramas and comedies in a trendy and easily-understood way. Many famous playwrights are portrayed here such as Bertolt Brecht or Ödön von Horváth.
